Right I can pop over on a night after work this week if u like yak a look act bring some spares in my bus and at least have a look for u I do charge a cup of tea on ur address I'll see how far away u R but it's light untill late now maybe wed or Thursday night as I'm still recovering from volksworld
So went over past Ludlow just over an hour to look at broken engine looked OK was just turning over ,cleaned points got good spark (had spare plug on a lead I grounded) then popped fuel pipe off into bottle turned over pumped fuel into bottle was ok , batt was a bit weak so took mine off my bus and used mine and was just turning over had a check over as heard hiss found a vacuum hose off carb, blocked off and poured a cap of fuel down carb it coughed a bit turned over had little coughs, got tdc tweeted timing and boom fired right up !! How ever choke not working and was struggling to idle and was a knocking from engine case Managed to get it to idle a bit but then looked further and turns out the oil pressure light doesn't work and it was doing 65/70 mph and lost power and smoke came out vents ect !! There isn't much compression by hand also a lot of knocking in case when turning over by hand This has been seen by a Vw specialist and says big end has gone and I think he is in right direction it's a bit ill Sorry I couldn't help @charlene but nice to meet ut husband and wish u all the best with it I did give him some local engine people Iv used in the past and still know just sorry I couldn't help amy further Nice bus though
Good on you Si, they now have a second opinion they can trust. Was worth a look, plenty of folks have been talked into replacing easily mendable engines. Not good news as it turns out obviously.
I don't think so bud but it shows I do listen to u guys after all as it was t1 engine he he it does all go in
Drove too fast for the engine and cooked it. 65-70 too fast for a 1600 even in tip top condition. Obviously they know that now. Oops.
The Beetle has different gear ratios - so 65 in the beetle probably has the same revs as 55 in a bus , (I read it in one of the manuals)- good to hear that I have been right keeping my bus to 55 mph tho'
thats what I did with my beetle, I like to drive it on but i used to start getting paranoid that it was going to explode, especially on long motorway runs, the gauges let me worry less, maybe a fool's paradise but it hasn't blown up yet
Im always amazed that on a rolling road when you look in the engine bay at max how calm it all seems?
