Why doesn't my alternator work? :(

Discussion in 'Mech Tech' started by Zed, Dec 23, 2015.

  1. Is there any braid protruding from the carbon brush at all?
If there is you maybe able to connect it to the adrift part with a bit of soldering

It seems you have two separate faults but still the worry of why the reg ended up knackered

Someone's already tried and failed to remove the wire. I'll leave it, from looking at the other it would be dicey to try and remove, it's hellish tight.
There's still circuit between the 2 rings. 4 ohms which compares exactly to the scrap one.
    Not a whisker. :(
It's a unit too, the other's ok but the brushes are more worn.

I think someone used it to pull back the brushes - I thought of doing that and was looking for it, it's how I found it was off. I won't be doing that now, have to think of something else.

It's back together with the brush pack from the scrap one, looks good inside, no burnt insulation. Cunning plan to get thing together that I think I'll keep to myself. :D

I found this on Vzi from Peter Good who restores alternators, supplies wiring looms etc and is well recommended. (that's a plug for cutting and pasting his advice)...
They certainly can be tested on the bench using a drill via a socket to match the pulley nut. Elecrically, connect the
Alternator B+ to Battery + ve
Alternator earth to Battery - ve
    Alternator D+ or 61 to Battery + ve via a 12 v 2 or 3 watt bulb.
This is good enough to confirm it works, as always make sure the 'warning lamp' goes off when 'running.' Peter Good

Later he goes on to say the regulator and mini harness have to be attached for external reg alts. But I don't have faith in the regulator. Maybe i should have now I found the alt problem? Maybe it was so weak due to the braid merely sitting against the top of the brush. Now I think of it I bet the brush pack fitter knew he'd done it and trapped the braid under the spring - the brush wore out, angle of spring changed and the braid came free.

  8. Sounds plausible and you have nowt to loose

  9. If the reg is knackered you will most likely get too high a voltage or nothing

I'm going to call the alternator good and refit it - no chance getting another tomorrow I think so nothing to loose.
Then I'll test the other van regulator resitances and see if it's same as mine. Then have a think. :)

  12. Fit the alternator fire it up and check the voltage output from the alternator

Euro car parts don't have one locally so it's Monday for them. I'm just having a coffee then i'll put the reg back and see what happens. I'm out of options.
If I knew for sure my only prob was the regulator I'd set off on battery and get as far as yours, you're on the way to york - ish. :)
