A have a few standard silencers but on close inspection they're all past their sell by date so...
I need to get one soonish.
One that'll fit on std Euro heat exchangers.
Not Vintage speed, I don't think so anyway.
I don't know what I want but I'm not looking for loud.
I don't really want to spend a lot of money - if I don't like whatever I get I'd like to be able to get rid without too many lost £'s.

If got the Vintage Speed side exiting twin pipe silencer on Gusbus..you know VS, I don't need to sell it to you!

Its not too loud, certainly not as quiet as standard - I guess its on par with the Just Kampers stainless quiet pack we had on the type 1

I like the sound from it :D

  3. i have the 150 bhp VS superflow one ...bought from heritage on one of they`re 10% off days ....IMHO ..really nice sound and the only fault is its too shiney ...i think i paid £381 ...the JK one is similar money and unless your spending big bucks i don`t think you can beat it unless you go more expensive ...turbo thomas and python =big bucks unless secondhand ....or just a new standard one

  4. Try a new standard one, its only 140 quid for the lot. They flow very well as standard

That was my original thought, mainly because I thought I had a couple of good ones bought as job-lot's recently! But I've added 450cc's.
They aren't Ernst anymore either and not finished - you have to put the studs in yourself after they've kindly filled the threads with paint for you. I reckon I was buggering about for an extra 1/2 hour last one.

  6. that's a shame, mine has been on for about 4 years now and is still looking good.

What about getting @Paul Weeding to make you one? Means you won't have to deal with VS?

I like the VS exhausts...but... 2 out of 2 sent back so far? Maybe just my bad luck, but I'm not going down that road again.

I need it next week, there wouldn't be time.

  10. Short term, use one of your not so great standard ones?

Then tell @Paul Weeding to crack on?

  11. Yeah, that definitely isn't gonna happen!!

I've had a couple of people after me for exhausts as it is, not enough hours in the day when you've got other things on too

I thought I'd read that but didn't want to say on your behalf in case the situation had changed. Maybe if you had 5 to make it would be worth it?
I could be interested in the longer run so the obvious Q is what's the ball park £s?

To save me chopping an old one in half, @Paul Weeding , you no doubt have?
Am I right in thinking that the shorter pipes in the heat exchangers are extended inside the silencer to make all pipes equal length?
Or is that just wishful thinking?
Original T1 exhausts were done like this.

  14. Wishful thinking dude...

Basically the exhaust has a baffle plate that runs the length of the exhaust, and at one end there is a section about 6ins long that is perforated, this allows the gasses to pass into the other half and down another pipe that's perforated to the tail pipe...

I can make something that'll flow better than a stock muffler, but as already pointed out, I'd really need to be batch making, as that would make making a jig worthwhile :)

We'd still be in the £400 bracket for a muffler style exhaust, something CSP style has a CSP style price attached to it ;)

Quite right too, the one you pictured on here looked well made.

And that's another thing about the VS exhausts, they're not much more than a big cylinder with 2 baffle plates. All pipes stop just inside the big cylinder. They are pretty noisy when you boot it - a nice noise, but I'm not getting any younger and feel a tad foolish. :)

  17. but i`m building a 2.4 ltr engine ! if thats old and not foolish then i`ll eat my flat cap

  18. Well there is the potential to make quite a quiet exhaust that flows well :)

And to hide my foolishness a bit, I'd prefer it to be as quiet as possible. :D

  20. The other option in that case is pipework... lengthen out the system and add 2 mufflers to the mix... But with it the cost goes up

For what you're doing, I'm pretty sure I can do a stock style muffler with some more internals going on, and sound absorber fabric :)
