I'm not going to help with the money as I've just been cleaned out yesterday by the hmrc, but I'll add my opinion dude,

I think its worth approaching a couple of small companies and saying what you want to do, ask them if they could do with an assistant for a couple of days, like work shadowing, even do it without pay, just to get your face noticed and ensure the line of work is right for you, get a feel for where the work comes from and which companies scoop it up. Some albeit brief experience, correct lingo, a familiar face and demonstration of ability is what will get you a job or give you the edge at an interview, if the course is only 2 weeks I'd try and get a foot in the door first before committing real money to it.

^^^ Some wise words there Para.
I teach the long term unemployed with the hope of getting them into the workforce, unfortunately the majority are happy living on the public purse. One or two a year are like you & really want a job, my usual suggestion is to go around the companies & ask. Even if they don't have something immediately available you have the chance that they will remember you when a position is available. You may have to start at the bottom but anyone with the talent & aptitude will move up fairly rapidly. Good luck Para. :)

  13. I'd stump up a few quid Para - seems like a good idea.I'd PM you, but can't find the PM button on here at present??? Has someone nicked it?

I was self employed for a few years (tree surgery, forestry, landscaping) until injury made me look for a regular wage. The biggest problem was trying to stand out from the crowd of other similar businesses. In the end a good reputation gets you business, but it takes a while to build up. I used to carve people something from the tree that was felled - nothing much, just a quick chainsaw carving of a mushroom, stool, bench, birdhouse, but it got me remembered and I got repeat business. Not sure that a sculpture of stonehenge made of rats would have the same effect though ;).

What sort of competition do you have in the area from similar businesses?

  14. i could give your first job get rid of the pond life that are outside our village shop

not to make wet on your fireworks is there the money in pest control i did some years ago and spent 50% of my time painting decorating and window cleaning.

While i admire you for having the balls to post that Para, i think you need to get real here, gone are the days you can decide what you want to do for a job unless you're either single or reckless, you've got a family and you say you'll do anything for them, if that's the case you need to do just that "anything" i'm getting bad vibes at work job wise at the moment and i don't think i'll be there this time next year..... i've got no kids of my own but my biggest goal in life is not to be unemployed, i left school at 16 worked at my first job for 2 years at armitage shanks then went straight to lucas for the next 13, i got made redundant and then started my current job, where i've been for 13 years - my current time of being unemployed is 2 weeks in the last 28 years, if i lose my job i'll be out sweeping streets if i have to even if i'd like the job as formula 1 presenter i doubt anyone would help me, please don't see this as a slag of of you, it isn't but you just need to get real - get a job doing anything and then when you're working do a night course or something to retrain to what you want to do.

  16. I'll stump up a score. Like your attitude. Do you have Paypal?
Too far South too be much more help but I do know we fork out £000,s on Pest Control each year.
In my experience the service is only as good as the operative you get, regardless of company, the right attitude and outlook mean much more than the company name on the side of the van.

Sorry Ricky, but I can't agree with this. It's attitude like that that causes people to sit on benefits claiming it's not their fault because there are no jobs. I've decided what I'll do for a living for the last 25 years and though I'm not raking it in at present, I could be if I applied myself a little more. Para has the gift of the gob even if he might be out of practice. I reckon he'd make a success of whatever he chose to do - how do you think anyone self employed gets going and builds a business? They just go for it and work hard.

I'll give you a tenner buddy, I think you're good for it, I agree with parts of what both zed and rick say but I can't fault anyone for trying to work.
Make sure you have other options as being self employed can be crap especially this time of year, painting and decorating etc.
keep us posted mate , I need a good supplier of professional flea control :)
