Would it be wrong to give new drivers an IQ test before giving them a provisional licence?

Just wondered if that is a consideration when someone applies?

I know most wagon drivers would fall below the requirement and it would halve the intake, but some people who are already driving wouldn't be able to fill the ruddy form in!:mad:

    Yes, it would be wrong.

IQ testing has been found to be flawed on numerous levels due to the testing methods e.g. many people think in the visual medium far more than the text based one; and the notion of one measurement categorically defining intellect.

Only numpties with high IQ's can't see the flaw of asking a question about an aircrafts flight time to a Maasai tribesman is a waste of time, yet Mr Mensa would die in the desert with a greater probability.

Testing for spatial awareness, ability to concentrate and some form of common sense would be good.

  4. a bit like the guy who was coming towards me the other day trying to overtake a bus while at double white lines on a corner and the brow of a hill, I don't know how the hell he passed a driving test..............................oh that may of been the problem he probably hadn't..

  5. Interesting idea. I recently ranted about "professional drivers" generally with the observation that people who drive for a living should actually posess skills relating to their profession which are over and above those of the general public. Its not really too much to ask is it. That said, im not sure IQ would be a good measure as im sure some people who score lower than others may well be perfectly good drivers given appropriate tuition and have the appropriate levels of skill and attention to be good at the job.

I have a good friend who regularly has to teach hgv drivers as part of their required training on cycle awareness. He describes many drivers who really dont display any empathy towards other road users and particularly cyclists who are reluctant to learn and who are convinced they dont need training. Theres a strong culture within drivers which is base, laddish and immature. Something needs to be done. Again with many taxi drivers, why is their skill level so low!

Proper profesionalisation of drivers is the way forwards with proper training and recognised qualifications that exceed the requirement of simply passing a test and address the requirements of them undertaking the role safely and efficiently....... i do believe there are many drivers that fit this desciption but its time to get those that dont off the road!

On a serious note. It may be flawed, but has been the basis of the 11 plus intake method to grammar schools since 1944.

  9. How the hell did i get into grammer then? As a dislexic discalculate i must have had a good day!

  10. A lot of testing these days is more nuanced. Midyis tests verbal, maths, spatial and 'other skills' in four separate adaptive tests (ie if you're doing well the questions get harder and vice-versa).
But I think the best way of testing drivers is a driving test.

  14. I read the title of this and had a chuckle as i thought it was going to be a rant after you'd been on the receiving end of some inept driving. Perhaps it might show more with regards to driving but as with any profession there are some better at it than others, i work in IT and the standards of professionalism vary considerably, we cant all be perfect can we ;)

Testing and IQ testing I'd imagine aren't the same thing.

Nevertheless, IQ is a flawed measurement of intellect.
