Why replace your amber signal lenses with clear ones?

  1. When I first began to notice this phenomenon, I thought it might just be a custom trend. After all, over here we have the insecure boys in their little flightless, though winged, Japanese cars with the ever-booming bass and the ostentatious flares poking out in every direction like cheap glue-on fingernails. They often replace their lenses with clear ones but it's not the same. On the obnoxious little rice-burners it looks flashy and custom. On a bus it just sort of looks sun-faded.
Then I noticed almost everybody seems to to be replacing those lenses, and doing it as soon as possible after buying the bus.
So maybe it's a new UK law that requires clear lenses?
    What's goin' on there?

  2. They're an easy little mod that anyone can do for very little money, and a lot of folk like em.
Not for me personally, but everyone's different :)

  3. I've got them was in two minds about it but I like them a my van is orange so the clear look ok .
Each to there own its like saying why is everyone putting alloys on there buses when the standard onces work fine .
    Each to there own :)

  4. the amber clashed with the Wilma green

  5. When my bus was put back together, the guy doing it realised the signal lenses needed replacing. So he fitted clear ones, because he thought it's what I'd like and because it gave it a more modern look. But he was wrong. I don't like clear ones and think they look kind of er, chavvy. Translated into Amercian, I guess chavvy is similar to trailer trash and the type of folk who drive round in their pipped-up Jap cars. :)

So I changed them back to amber.

i didn't do it mr Baywatcher sir! to be fair with stateside vans it is a bit more of a ballsache but only because it's not as easy to buy a twin fillament bulb in amber (as you know - in effect there are 3 bulb filaments in a u.s bus) i like the way the amber lights shine up on sidelight anyway i doubt it would look as good as it does if they were white running lights.

    Strange thread.

  10. Just an aesthetic thing for me, I think the clear lenses look much better with the blue.

Hadn't even thought of changing mine - probably amber is best with the yellow methinks

Clear does look better against the blue :)

A lot of cars have clear lenses as standard, with the orange bulbs. If I recall, the Mk2 Golf Drivers from the early 90's were the first, or some of the first with clear indicator lenses on the front - unsure on the back lights.

As a motorcyclist I have to say that clear lenses in bright sunlight are next to impossible to see when in use - the full amber lens is much easier to see in that circumstance.

My understanding is it's an MOT failure on amber bulbs if they aren't coloured enough - the amber seems to flake off the bulb over time.

  16. i have clear ones as they match the white grill better ...
pink and white looks good ... adding jaffa to the mix would just look odd

  20. I always think crossovers' faces look miserable, upset or sad with their indicators so low down ;)
