Whats the best upgrades when rebuilding my 2.0 FI motor

  1. Its running fine atm, but burns about a 1 ltr of oil to every 2 tanks of oil, and mileage aint great. No smoking, no drips of oil or any funny noises, just a bit tappety on start up

thinking of a pre emtive rebuild over winter. is it worth doing any upgrades, bigger barrels and pistons??

  2. Should work better with petrol in the tank!
If the tappets are very "tappety" I would measure them and adjust as they can waste fuel if they are well out. A 2L as standard has plenty of poke, no point in uprating. And should not burn oil.

  3. If you're staying with the FI then there's not much you can do...

The last FI motor I did, I increased the valve sizes, and popped in a cam with the bit more lift and duration.... but you have to be careful, and the FI system runs on air flow into the engine, so increasing the capacity is a bit of a no no!!

  4. The best upgrade would be to bin the engine and go for a Subaru conversion ;)

  5.
  6. A subaru engine sounds the dogs wotsits but what does it cost and what does it do to your insurance?
We seem to be a parsimonious lot on here generally! I suppose you have to spend the other arm and leg on some super duper brakes?

  7. Insurance stayed the same on mine... (2.7 Porsche)
Brakes are good enough if well maintained - the bus was never meant to be driven like a race car!

  8.
  9.
  10. im staying aircooled, otherwise id just buy a t25

was thinking bigger b+p to go 2056

  11.
  12.
  13. Ditch the type 4, upgradeto a type 1.

  14.
  15.
  16. you can't up the cc... the FI dictates that it'll run like a dog at idle, and you'll cook the motor as it'll be running lean for the cc

not that I know what I'm talking about :p

Last stock FI engine I did, I essentially built it as per the 914 2L... so heads were modded to 42x36, and I put in a eurorace H grind cam... runs real good.. Idle was a little interesting to set up... but once it was there it ran (runs) real good!!

  17. You can uprate the cc but its costly. As well as b&p's, cam etc you will need to replace the fi for a programmable system. There are a few specialists out there but mainly in the USA
It's a bit of a minefield but with time and lots of dosh you can create a monster!
    Anything is possible
