    i wish you hadn't said that , i have just taken my van down to the respray chap and pinned him down to a price for a blowover on the bottom half for £250 - now i'm feeling guilty :(

    bank the cheque.
    get someone else to check the system.
    if they try to recoup the money later tell them that you made numerous phone calls to them and they never got back to you so you had to pay someone else to rectify the system, if they had of got back to you and sorted the problem out they would have got the cheque back.

    I'd let them know about the wrong payment (their ears'll prick up if money's mentioned), but tell them you're withholding it until someone comes round to fix your panels.
