What wire to use?

Discussion in 'Mech Tech' started by Disco_kegs, Oct 25, 2012.

  1. Wiring my radio in to my leisure electrics. Have a slave fuse box with 20 amp fuses in its which I'm going to connect it to. Went to get some wire today but unsure of what amp/thickness to get. Please help.

  2. I think stereos on have a 5amp fuse... so some 10amp cable will be plenty

  3. a brilliant place for wire is Auto Electrical Supplies. they do almost every colour combination. They also sell the brass connectors and insulators.

brilliant postal service as well. loads of people on here use them.

The fuse is to protect the wire. If the wire is fed from a 20 amp fuse then the wire must not overheat when carrying 20 amps. So 20 amp rated or thicker wire is safe.

As audio is quite a peaky sort of signal, average power will be a lot less than peak. The cable should be heavy enough for the peak power or you get voltage drops and reduction in peak power or worse some kind of instability and distortion if the wire is too thin.

50 watts a channel x 4 gives peak current over more like 20A because tha amplifer isnt 100 percent eficcient. But it doesnt blow the fuse because the average current is probably under 10A.
