HI all, just trying to work out if I need a 2 tonne or 3 tonne trolley jack for my crossover - want to be safe - looked at the weights etc of the vans in various forms but wanted to know what other people were using first?? any info appreciated, thanks
I use a 2 ton garage style trolley jack mines a draper one (not one of these tiny-tiny things) make sure you get some decent axle stands and dont go under with just the trolley jack!! mine is similar to this but a bit of an older model possibly. http://www.drapertoolbox.co.uk/draper-37174-2-tonne-hd-2128-64753
Make sure the one you get is also tall enough to get the thing up in the air!! Halfords are doing these: http://www.halfords.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/product_storeId_10001_catalogId_10151_productId_254057_langId_-1_categoryId_255207 At half price - I have one, only criticism is the fast jacking part takes some leaning on - i.e. I'd prefer more pumps and less effort to get things up in the air.
If your changing a wheel then fine but looks like a toy to me. I want something substantial to lift the bus, especially if Im going under (axle stands again) Go and have alook at some and decide wht fits the work you are doing. A small garage style jack wins hands down and wont topple over sideways. A jack to take with you to change a wheel is a whole different ball game.
i ve got a 4 ton one from my local motor factor not for the weight but the height think it was about 80 quid
The tiny pad on the Halford one looks dangerous. If it's for home, get a 3-tone one - they have a large pad on the end that your van won't slip off + they will jack your van high enough to get the engine out.
I've got one like the Halfords one and I would go for one with a bigger pad another time. It doesn't inspire confidence when I use it
I'd go for this. http://www.google.co.uk/products/catalog?q=draper+high+lift+trolley+jack&oe=utf-8&rls=org.mozilla:en-GBfficial&client=firefox-a&um=1&ie=UTF-8&tbm=shop&cid=8304322134886583588&sa=X&ei=vxUnT4ztI8eb0QXC0sjPCg&ved=0CFkQ8wIwAQ A bit pricey for occasional use but the ability to jack up to 800mm without using wooden blocks is worth it.
I got a 2 tonne one from Machine Mart, been fine so far. As above, get a nice wide jacking plate (with a rubber bit if poss)
i've got one of these http://www.machinemart.co.uk/shop/product/details/ctj2qlg-2-t-quick-lift-pro-trolley-jac mines the older model without the black quick lift lever on the side but esentially the same unit i've had it since about 1998-1999? bought it for my first bay as the "happy shopper" type jacks dont have the height and arnt stabble with the vans weight on bet its lifted more vans and cars over the years than were at vansfest last year ;D ;D ;D plus the seals started leaking about 18months since, i rang them up gave them my old postcode they identifed the model for me and sent me a full seal set next day for about £7 try that in 10 years with your chinese halfords jack! these are good as well for supporting the van as there a bit higher than the cheap one ive got a couple of set http://www.machinemart.co.uk/shop/product/details/as10-axle-stands
go online and find a jack that is the same as the ones you see in your local garage and get heavy duty stands ...they will be your best friends in the tool box...nice long handled jack is handy as well ,just right for luggin the engine in and out .....with tools its always best to get the top quality brands, they will last for longer, maybe for 30 years+,if you clean and service them ,they will save you time and effort ,these 3 tonne jacks you see are ok but ,i got 2 of em that i hate ,a machine mart 3 ton and jcb 3 ton ,both exactley same made and they arnt quality either, just mass produced crap...im saving for a lovely jack, found a nice one here for ya ,take a look at the site ,some nice jacks there http://www.justoffbase.co.uk/Trolley-Jack-Yankee-3ton-Low-Entry-Sealey-3001LE
