  1. we have a 15 year old work experience lad with us for a week in July , I have him for a day showing him CNC programming and CNC milling . Instead of him watching me make stuff i thought i`d help him make something he could keep but a bit stumped for ideas ..... needs to be done easy in a day and cool, any ideas ?

  2. what materials do you work with? on what scale can you make stuff?

    brucieboy and Moons like this.
  6. Just stick a broom handle through his overall sleeves whilst hes wearing them and then hoist him to the ceiling
Thats how work experiance went for me lol

  7. See if you can find out what he's into and do summat related. It'll engage him more and pair of you ll get more out of it.
I was welded to a flat roof with bituemen, which I thought was pretty tame for my cousin

Can you CNC him a left handed spanner/screwdriver, a long weight or a glass hammer?

Thus you can pay homage to a 1000's apprentice jokes and he will get some useful experience.

  9. A Gear Knob, my late friend made me one when we were apprentices and its been on most of my cars ever since.

Oh and get him to paint it with tartan paint ;)

  10. I remember from my work experience, I made a few sets of parrellels and a winding block. I still use them now.

  11. we can machine anything up to 1000x500 mm , plastics ,aluminium ,stainless etc ..... last one he made a reaction tester but as we are busy i only have him for a day and machining an impeller using 5 axis is a bit ott , we have a couple of apprentices at the moment and to say they are useless and not interested is an understatement .....

it's 'cos they can make more money nicking stuff and selling a bit of blow innit bruv? plus the hours are unsociable - I mean who gets up before loose women? purleeeeeeease!

  13. Are you showing him how to programme at the machine or on a pc using cad?

  14. Set of combination spanners with his name on them out of a block of stainless would be cool

As long as you tell him not to use them with any rigour!

As above find out what he is in to and maybe work together on a project while showing him the basic work set up.

Remember it is work experience not a apprenticeship and my lad really enjoyed working with a architect for a couple of weeks, he said it was interesting and informative, the work place was office and site visits, Worcester cathedral was the site visits that time and he was full of it when he came home each day, site hat hi vis etc and he traveled on the train to Worcester each day which was a first!

As a dad i would have been mortified if he was badly treated on work experience.

Now as for apprenticeship pranks when i was a apprentice mechanic in a small garage i was chased down the road by my bullying boss and his equally bullying sidekick after they had threatened to do all manner of things to me, i decided to leg it, they chased one on foot one in the landy and bundled me into the back tied up, they then lifted me upside down on the engine hoist pulled down my cacks and greased my balls, not content with the apparent hilarity of that they then called in the young kiosk girl from next door ( who i fancied like mad) and let her have a good gawp, happy days o_O
