What Historical Even Would Like To Have Witnessed?

Discussion in 'General Discussion' started by BayWatcher, Nov 6, 2011.

  1. Woodstock? Tearing down the Berlin wall? The Kennedy assassination? The Apollo 13 mission? Rosa Parks refusing to sit in the back of the bus? The 9 day rein of Lady Jane Grey? President Clinton's oral indiscretion with Monica Lewinsky? Janice Joplin busting a bottle of Jim Beam whiskey on Jim Morrison's head? Buddha meditating under his famous tree?
    Do tell and why?
(and can we please attempt to refrain from the silly? Such as the one millionth McDonald's cheeseburger sold, etc,...)

  2. Karma points to anybody with true tales of witnessed significant events.

  3. I was going to say at the creation of the Universe with a digital camera but wasn't sure I wanted to open up that particular can of worms again!

I'd settle for being at Wembley Stadium on the 30th July 1966

  4. Aw crap. Can we try to leave sports and mythological religious events out of it?
Please, just things that really happened and had nothing to do with who could run the fastest or kick a ball the farthest, I beg you.

  5. I would liked to have been present at the festival of britain in 1951,its of no world significance just a time of sheer excitement for the masses leaving the drab post war years and looking to the future. A propaganda exercise by the government probably but I like it.

  6. Sorry, I thought the question was what historical event would I like to have witnessed??

OK then, how about being witness to Martin Luther King's speech in 1963? Must have been pretty amazing. :)

I did think about the storming of the beaches of Normandy..... Wouldn't have wanted to be there though :(

I was there when Grant Holt scored a hat-trick against Ipswich last year if you would allow me it ;)

  7. the Bombing of port stanley...

The Crusades, the 3rd Crusade was it, the one Richard went on when he was up aganist Saladin.... the middle ages I find quite fascinating, not long finished reading The Canterbury Tales. I'd have like to have been an invisible observer, woul'dnt want to be in the thick of it, but would have liked to separate the myth from the reality.

I was at Live Aid in 1985, ok not Woodstock but if memory serves, Gary thingummajig from Spandau Ballet said at the time it was "our Woodstock". I don't think it was, but thats what the man said anyway.

  10. The meeting at the George Hotel, Huddersfield, August 29th, 1895 - when the northern clubs decided to tell the RFU to stuff it and set up the Northern Rugby Football Union which later became the Rugby Football League

  11. Ramses II being crowned Pharaoh! I'd loved to have seen how the temples and palaces would have looked then with all their colour and sheer grandeur, must have looked gob smacking

Yes, I know I'm weird to choose that ^-^

  12. The battle of Hastings .I would like to have seen if Harold really got one in the eye .some say it was a twisting of the facts

  13. I visited Berlin during the fall of the wall. If I could have witnessed anything I think it would have been 1884, George Eastman developing the technology which was film. This medium has been used to capture histories events ever since.

  14. Wright brothers at Kitty Hawk..
First foot on the moon (did he say it or would I be in some warehouse somewhere?)
Thought of a few others but it would be so frustrating not being able to shout 'duck' or 'behind you'.
Lot off people name old battles when this question comes up. Remember seeing a documentary where someone demonstrated what old battles would have been like by swinging a broad sword at a side of beef hanging from a hook, icky!
    Cheers

  15. This is not a historical event. But I would go back a time before Steven Hawkins lost his voice and record it.

I witnessed Eddie Kid break himself at the Bulldog Bash... not a truly historical event, but one hell of a stack.

  19. The battle of Trafalger

    The Raid on st Nazaire

same as Blowfish ....the Normandy beaches

    Boudica burning London

Raising the stones of stone henge

to name a few I'd like to see.......I could go on ;D
