...apart from having a chunk of piston embedded in it...

So they told her the SVDA was wrong, fitted the mech one and gave her the SVDA back? It's surprising how many "dubbers" think an 009 is the correct distributor for a lawnmower.

  3. The piece was just sort of stuck there as if someone had glued it there. Don't ask me how, it just picked of with my fingers, not a mark on the head. She stopped straight away as it was on a hill and wouldn't get moving again and was recovered. This seems to have been the saving grace.

Yep gave her it back, she brought it back to me with the engine.

But the same melted piston damage. This is probably a stupid question, but can you remember what the timing was found to be set at? Did Ash check that?

No but I did drive all the way to the Loire set to type 4 (wind turn the page for me). Can't remember if that was same trip.

  6. for me it would come down to ...... If you charged the lady for the work you must have given her a warrenty and a list of whats covered and whats not covered ? If you buy a long block from the usual suspects they either fit a 009 with paint in the screws so if you mess with dizzy your warrenty is null and void or like Heritage supply engine with no dizzy drive and a get out clause saying if you cock it up its your fault .
I get you want to do the right thing but you can`t be responsible for someone elses mistakes . best case total strip ,clean ,new bearings and one new B&P .
Who supplied the B&P`s there are some Marmite ones out there ..
Infuture could you not fit those stick on temperature things that show if its been overheated ? Can`t remember who does but one remanufacturer does

  9. Said sticker changes colour at 120°c.... so by just driving your van normally you are going to invalidate your warranty!! o_O

surely if a bit of piston is embedded in the head it must have damaged it.
I dropped a valve seat on mine and this is the result

  11. Not the slightest mark, Its as if the piston went up, the bit got glued and the piston went back down again. Very Very odd

  12. Correct and its Vege! Just removed one from mine!

  15. The sticker is a good idea, but it needs to be 10°c higher!!!

I've just had a Vega put in......within 30 miles it was onto 2nd warning block on sticker....but everything seems fine.
Garage who fitted engine unconcerned.....I'm trying to be !!

  17. 248 deg. F? That is too hot for normal use, my bug never gets above 200.... old engine used to go up to that sort of temps, it was running lean as Marmite and pulled most of the head studs out ;)

  18. Bus engines run hotter... Well type 1 engines do!! Beetles being a fair bit lighter means that they run that little bit cooler!!

    :)

  19. ^this. Type 1s work considerably harder in a bus.
