Yes, I thought the same with a few of the fights where he’s fighting (relatively) weedy guys and you think with one punch he’d knock them out. Like you I loved it though. Second series on the way so looking forward to that
I’ve not seen what you are talking about, so I can’t comment directly. But from my experience if I had to list say the top ten most dangerous guys I’ve ever known, trained with and seen fight/spar etc, you be surprised at the size of quite a few of them. I’d say six out of the ten would definitely be under the average size/build and of those six probably three you definitely say were small. When I was in my twenties, the master of one of the organisations that I trained at was a very slightly build Korean gentleman. A wonderful humble man. At the time the British full contact champion was a member of our organisation. He was a monster big black guy, built like an American fridge with terrifying power. He couldn’t lay a glove on the Korean master, who just toyed with him and could finish him at will. The head of my current organisation isn’t big either. Maybe 5ft 6. My actual instructor is a big solid highly skilled guy who you’d never want to meet a bad version of, but our head instructor controls him like a rag doll. there’s plenty of videos online of small female ju jujutsu black belts taking on much bigger male football players and body builders and just dominating them and controlling them at will. I don’t think until you’ve trained/sparred with people like this that you can full appreciate just how completely helpless against them you really are. I’ve rolled with a few of them in a limited capacity and in seconds you go from having a clear plan to just trying to survive. It’s a very humbling experience I can tell you. Any notion you had that you’d stand a chance because of their size very quickly goes out the window.
Oh I get that, that’s not what I’m saying, this is a man mountain who is highly skilled in different forms of combat, I don’t discount that some of his smaller opponents in this series are similarly skilled, but it’s a drama, they’re not going to write it that he steamrollers each and every opponent regardless of size. I did Ju Jitsu for a few years, so I get that a lot of these fighting systems are not about size but rather technique, using your opponent’s strength against him/her, and of course, having the confidence to put those techniques into practice in a real life situation. It’s a good series, well written and characters you care about. That’s the main thing.
you get exactly what I’m saying then. You must have got tapped by people much smaller or younger than you and thought how the hell did that just happen?
I’ll have to have a look. The last series of books I read was the Jo Nesbo ones, and as good as they were, they got a bit samey after a while.
He was pretty bad ass as Dirty Harry. so many great one liners. The scene of the job interview with Tyne Daly is a classic.
On your recommendation I thought I’d give Reacher a look. He operates like a terminator. It’s better than the high budget Tom Cruise films. It has humour and sexual tension, and because of that Mrs Sydney also likes it, so I don’t have to watch it alone. We’re currently binging it until pub time, taking turns to get supplies from the kitchen. What a lovely day.
Not seen the films but I love the dry humour of the series . Glad you like it, I’d hate for someone to start watching something because I said it was good, then despise it
The jack reacher books are good. Some are better than other but I like the first one . The killing floor.
