I'm still a bit confused as to which one I need. 75 type 4 2ltr with std 55amp alternator, if that helps.

The round ‘L’ section seal was for ‘72 to ’75 but my ’77 also has it. Just look at the tin around the alternator, if there is a round hole it’s the round seal, if it’s an oval hole it’s the later seal.

    Left tin, ’72 to ’75, small round hole = Round seal p/n 021 903 203
Right tin, ’76 to ’79, large oval hole = Weird shaped seal with a lug on the side p/n 022 903 203

Thank you very much for that. Mine is definitely the later type. Might have to boost the Aussie economy by a few dollars.

That would be really useful actually to try and copy. Please could I take you up on this?

If you are looking to order one of these from down under, I wouldn't mind sharing postage with you on one as I didn't even know I was missing this until this thread!
If on the other hand you find a way of copying these by 3d printing or something else, please keep us in the loop.
    Ta v much :)

  8. Thanks for all the info guys, what started as a thread for a wee missing cover plate has unearthed a few missing bits from a few buses!
So I checked and I have the small hole alternator tin and no seal that I can see but my alternator is fitted pretty snug up agains the tin, can’t see how any significant amount of hot air would be capable of seeping through.

Ask yourself why would VW have spent time and many thousands of Deutsche Marks fitting a part that wasn’t required. :)

  10. Fair point.
I’ll see what I can knock up.

Slightly gnarled but still functional hopefully

@Norris, may I ask if is this just a flat ring or does it have a profile and what material (hard plastic type or soft rubber type). I'm just wondering is if I can't get one, how to make one. Cheers

It's hard plastic. Most of it is flat apart from a slightly raised rim on the inside of the circular hole facing the alternator. The tag that sticks out to engage with the adjustment bolt is stepped. There's a sketch on here: https://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=615013

It would be ideal for 3D printing
