WANTED:- Alternator adjustment screw cover

Discussion in 'Late Bay Parts Classifieds' started by jude7789, Jul 30, 2021.

  1. Recently bought one from JK but it’s way too small to fit the hole for some reason?
    Is there large/small available?
Anyway looking for one to fit my ‘72 1700 type 4.
    Cheers

Your hole has been mangled by people prising against it to tighten the fan belt.
The cover will indicate just how badly. If you took it off you may be able to bend it back to a useable shape.

You wouldn't be the first, I include myself, to have all your tin painted or powder coated without checking it will fit/isn't damaged like that. Painful to wreck the pretty finish bending it back after but such is life.

  3. Ah I see, thanks for that.
ive never had the cover during my ownership, when I bought it there was a piece of sponge stuffed int9 the hole.
Suppose I could see if I can either repair the hole or make something else to fit.
id still take a cover if someone has one kicking about though.

If by cover you mean the plastic bit, there is only one size and you said you have one already?

  5. I returned it to JK as it didn’t fit.

It’s part number 021119295, C&C have them but it will be the same as the one you sent back to JK and won’t fit the mutilated tin. https://www.customandcommercial.com...nator_adjuster_hole_plug_type_4_engine_24845/

You could cut a cover from sheet steel and screw it on.

I can’t see from the pic but is there the sealing ring between the alternator and the tin?

  9. What does this sealing ring look like, don’t know if I have one or not?
    What does it do?

...and there are two types of sealing ring and though my memory is sketchy here, could be two versions of the tin part too.

Yep, there are two different sizes of tin depending on the alternator (?). They have different diameter holes in the middle

What's the disadvantage of not having that sealing ring? Don't remember fitting one on mine either o_O

Mine has the larger diameter hole in the tin and the sealing ring fills the gap wherever the alternator is adjusted to tension the belt. Photo shows it fully deflected to one side...

However the sealing ring shown in the Haynes manual looks different to mine, I presume with the smaller diameter holed tin. Either way I presume it's to either stop muck getting in, or to avoid the cooling air flow escaping

  15. I cut my own seal from some heat resistant cooking silicone mat. Fills the gap and sends the air through the alternator a bit more.. didn't stop it dying though..

Your seal ring should be like this pic (from samba), later alternator end tin has an oval hole and a different seal. It’s an age thing and nothing to do with the alternator output. Without the seal ring and/or adjuster cover hot air from the outside of the alternator will be sucked into the engine cooling fan.

Thanks Geoff. Makes sense and no I haven't got one.

Edit: Anyone know where to get one?

AFAIK neither style of seal ring is available new in Europe*. A reasonable copy of the later seal p/n 022 903 203 (the pic that Norris posted) could be made but the ‘L’ section round seal p/n 021 903 203 would be much more difficult – a job for a 3D printer?

If anyone is struggling for the later seal ring I have a slightly gnarly spare one (somewhere!). The one shown in the pic above was bought from a TLBer a couple of years ago to replace it
