VW Campers - only an illusion of freedom?

  1. It made me laugh....I thought it was quite insightful..but not particularly well researched:
No mention of leaking door seals, frequent breakdowns, crappy heaters, and geeky forums:thumbsup:

Its true it will only give and illusion Unless you get of your ass and embrace it and want the lifestyle it gives you
I have met people who have bought a van expecting it all to happen and not get the whole old car and camping thing.

For me it starts as soon as i sit in the seat and turn the key
the van is to complement the lifestyle not the lifestyle on its own

Guess he hasn't watched "Gordon's Kitchen Nightmares"

Brings around the debate about No 2's in a Porta Potti again - not on my watch matey!

  6. ^^^This ^^^

I have 3 retro's for this very reason.....I like to drive stuff that reflects my personality.....temperamental, a bit niche, and likely to kill you if not looked after correctly hahaha :p :)

Each to their own. Get a van for the love of them. Expect to get dirty. There are worse ways of spending your money.

  9. It made me laugh. It's a completely fictional article in a satirical blog about how silly newpapers are. It's really not anything to get worked up about ;)

'To expose people's stupidity and vice..', that's exactly what they're are doing in that article, how many people do you see who bought a vw because they thought they were buying an alternative, idyllic, means of escape from the rat race, only to find it's an expensive, stressful money pit?
I thought a very British trait was the ability to laugh at ourselves?
I think most of their stuff is funny and to the point, there's lots of political stuff on there as well. 'spastics' and cancer sufferers wouldn't really come under 'satire'.

    Whs....

  15. Its as funny as it is true for the most part, people do buy them thinking just owning a special car will change their lives, just as many couples think having a baby will save their marriage. There wouldn't be so many for sale if there weren't so many disappointed people.

The article did make me laugh, but to be honest, I can't relate to any of it. we've saved a lot of money in accommodation and seen many places that would be either impossible or too expensive to see any other way, so in a way that bus did give us a lot of freedom and only positive experiences. If i'm lucky, i can even arrange the van to compensate for its lacking fuel economy by getting it gigs in TV ad's and weddings.

You did read my post later on?

As an aside, that site suffers dreadfully from the number one comic faux pas - it's predicatable. Really predictable. And the second sin - it's not brave is it? Not really. Plays to the stands I think.

This rabble couldnt hold a candle to Frost, Moore and Cook.

  18. nicely put. sourced a fantastic unwelded dormy for my inlaws a no of years ago, used for a year after a very expensive paintjob. never got put back together properly and spent another 4 years on the drive. sold for a song when they decided to build an extension. They still camp in a tent bigger than my house! dont think they got it really.

I get a kick out of just siitting in the bus' listening to some sounds and reading!

I think they're better than predictable, but you're right about Frost, Moore and Cook.
