VW Campers - only an illusion of freedom?

Discussion in 'General Discussion' started by Violetta, Nov 18, 2013.

  1. I think its all about effort. If you want an out going lifestyle, you have to put the effort in. Its a lot easier to buy a van and sit at home watching the tele box than it is to actually get off your backside and do something. I also think for a lot of people, owning one of these vans is more of a statement then life style and fair play. There are vans and we can do what we like with them. If it works out to be too expensive in the one run, you properly brought the wrong vehicle.

  2. Good ole Daily Mash, well noted for it's concise and opinion free articles. ;)
Gotta be said that they're not THAT far off though!

  3. It is reasonably balanced afterall many must have heard the "romantic" carp spouted at one time or another :D Think @icepug put it just right.

  4. I LoL'ded!
They're not far off the mark to be honest!
I'm away most weekends in mine though.....i'm a handsome barsteward so have had a fair bit of the sex in it, and it doesn't have a loo, so no issues there (i'm a bloke....the world is my urinal!)
All motorised transport gives the illusion of freedom though.....think of the car adverts that show the latest model of euro Marmiteebox flying along empty streets in filtered light.....show me that depiction in your average city centre at rush hour and i'll eat my hat!
If you're a hardcore 'wild' camper then i'd argue that as long as you don't mind being regularly mistaken for a dogger and can afford the horrendous fuel bill (I put in £150 last weekend to go around North Devon) then the world is your oyster.

I think they are spreading a little unhappyness where ever they go.

It's not hard to dissect any human endeavour and find some crappy bits - I don't read articles like this as it easy to do that. Even tongue in cheek it gets boring.

Having a career pretending to be a journalist writing that tosh must be like a borken dream for the writer eh.

  8. That did make me chuckle :D

For me it's about the adventure & how it makes me feel when I get behind the wheel and the relaxation once pitched at my choice of destination, kids exploring or off annoying others ( @Baysearcher @Ermintrude @every one else at techenders :D ) leaving me with a few moments of peace to sit and enjoy my Brandy & coke.

I get as much enjoyment from a 20 mile trip for a one or two night stay than I do when we have been further and for longer!

What I have come to realize is I enjoy mixing with others when I camp, be it round the fire at techenders or when friends join us for a few nights away in their tent etc.

  9. Don't forget people, it's satire;) I'd say that's the experience of at least 60% of bay owners.(apart from the porta-loo bit)

The illusion of freedom is only to the people who don't own one. The reality is pretty straightforward to them in the know, like us. They are great fun, they cost a lot of money to run, they make you smile.

    .
the use of humour, irony, exaggeration, or ridicule to expose and criticize people's stupidity or vices, particularly in the context of contemporary politics and other topical issues.

Obviously they got bored of the harder subjects that might need some application of brain.

I think they should do spastics next or people with cancer.

There is a certain amount of that article that we can all relate to. On the other hand I have done many a positive post regarding the "good" camper van experience and people have responded accordingly.

Whatever we write about our buses and trips away in them someone will have experienced similar issues or feelings.

I suppose we have had our fair share of praise from the egotistical press and tv people, it's probably backlash time.

Matters not one jot really. Those who dub will carry on dubbing. Those who float will float on.
