Urgent! Overheating! Get me to Techenders please!!!

Discussion in 'Mech Tech' started by dubster, Sep 2, 2011.

  1. Only managed 10th miles on way to Techenders, have a 40mph top speed and the engine has overheated so much i can hear it crackling as it cools down. Coughing and spluttering has stopped a bit now its cooled down. Got a slight overfill of oil, would that cause overheating?

what can i do to get it the next 90 miles to get some help with it? or is it an admit defeat and pay the guy near me to strip the carbs and sort it out?

    cheers

Check the fan for obstructions/faults - you can put your hand round the back of the fan housing when it's cool. The fan is turning?

What's the history with the engine?

Check timing, if its out it'll overheat

  4. Itd always run a bit hot. caused oil soaked foam to catch alight a few weeks ago. Just gave it a bit more of a run and picked more speed up so that's normal now. oil dipstick not so hot to touch now either. does smell a bit warm. fan looks to be turning fine.....

  5. u alrite geezer,im always about to help mate ,can you get to bethnal green ,ill time it up for ya and check ya engine out for ya mate .....peace out

  6. Cheers! actually got it running fine, half way here and temp ok, just backfiring constantly now over 20 mph and have no power!

Bloody one thing after another at the mo!

    AA on the way!

  7. AA....do they come out for vw campers then ?coz i heard  they didnt .........sounds very much like timing issues there bruv ,oh well another boring saturday ,ill have to fit me leccy in camper then ,hope he sorts out mate
    peace out

  8. it would help if you put the engine type and dizzy set up
it does sound like your points have closed up or timing is out

  9. Think Stu has a Type 4 1700 engine can't remember what Dizzy he has

  10. Cheers, yep 1700, 009 dizzy! points are a little closed, would that cause a backfire then?

  11. points gap should be 0.4mm, any adjustment will knock the timing out.
if the gap is too small the power will be down, hills will be almost impossible.

if it was me i would check gap, regap as necessary and see if its any better. the timing will need a tweak too.

  12. snappppppppppp had same problems in april was the catalytic converter had collapsed internally but do you have one?????mainly imports sometimes have them on????

  13. what carbs do you have on there??

if they're stock ones, check for leaks on the balance pipe, and sort out your points gap and timing as per aussie bay...

if they're not stock ones, how long have they been on? and if they've been ok (if they've been on a while) then, air leaks, and timing again... if they're new, what carbs are they, and what jets are you running, idles, mains, air corrections, emulsion tubes, and chokes?

  14. lol, well since posting this in september, I've had the carbs fully refurbished at CarbExchange and birdy has well and truly sorted the engine out for me......

    Cheers though! :D
