I'm just reassembling my rear break shoes, springs and linkages for the handbreak, and I've been told I've go an unsual set up. most vans apparently have a forked bar that sits between the break shoes with the shoes resting in the 'forks' mine has the link bar sitting across the face of the shoes (out ward facing side) and the link connects to the shoes via a pin on each shoe, the handbreak leaver is then connected to this link via another pin and horse shoe clip I'm having a bit of difficulty as the top spring (between shoes) seems to be pushing the link outwards so the part that the hand break connects to fouls the back of the outer half shaft plate ....has any one got any pics of this set up as Bently or Haynes dont show it ...I'll try and get pics of my set up tomorrow thanks
brakes... unless you're having a lot of teas today Are you trying to fit the spring to the front or rear of the shoes? And pics would help Lesson to be learned too... only strip down one side at a time, so you can reference back to the other side
I know the type but don't remember a problem. Have you got the lever from the correct side of the bus?
as above, its possible to fit the lever on the wrong side of the shoe and on the wrong side of the wrong shoe, get up some pictures sir diddyman
But surely fitting it to the wrong side of the right wheel, or having the right shoe on the wrong side (assuming the lever's for the right side, even if wrong), would also cause problems? Right, I'm off to do some brake-dancing ...
not as much as you may think, it looks ok at first its only when you operate the handbrake it all goes wrong
thanks guys springs are fitted on the rear of the shoes (inner face) and link on the front (outer face) definatly the links are on the right wheel ....I've not taken the other side apart yet .....so I'll guess it will be a good idea to have a look at that side ....perhapse I should have looked before posting but I wanted to check if any one else had the same sort as they are not the same as the picsin the manuals .....and thank for pointing out my spelling mistake Paul
Dude, I had to refer to the opposite rear drum on my golf the other day.. got a weird cross spring system on the top bar, for the self adjust system... I had it all in bits on the floor, and for the life of me I couldn't see how it went back together LOL So yeah, we all like to tease
I believe this is what you have? Hope the pic saves you going out in the cold for a minute. This was my 73 westy - disgraceful! I narrowly escaped death shortly before this picture was taken. Normally I brake very gently and try to look ahead so when I had to use the brakes in anger, Marmite happened. Now I give them some slammage now and again just to see.
thats the one zed thanks mate luckilly as I have some space at gingersvw I dont have to go out in the cold! (not that is warm in the garage either!) it looks like I've got it assembled correctly ....guess it will just need a bit of tweeking! .....and I love a bit of banter snotty Paul Weeding
What years yer bus mate. Mines a 72 (73) and its same as Zeds pic above One end is a pin through a hole and the other is a pin in a slot
Incidentally, the usual issue if you cant get the required travel is that the slot elongates. Ive welded mine up and filed a new slot! Going to change to a late set up at some point but last time I was going to noone had any spreader bars.
by jove, I think thats it old chap ....I think I've put it in the hole opposite the slot, not the one above it thanks mate
yep same as mine old drums had the fixed bar - got new shoes and they had no bar (H) so had to get the H sections - then tried fitting- what a pain in the ass - there is a right way and a wrong way the H bars. also the only was to get the spring on is to take the stub axle off did put a bit about it in the resto quote Got out the new rear drum pads to put on only to find out that they were wrong, so my nights work just went down the pan. The new ones require an H shape bar, and the ones I have has this bar but attaches via a 2 small pivot points Looking at the catalogue – my old ones are from pre 75 and the new ones pre post 75 – but my camper is 78 so it looks like some has fitted the old pads. So have had to order up the H sections. next day----- Last night finished off putting the rear drum pads on after getting the wrong bits. What should be an easy job turned out to be a pain in the ass. First was working out this H thing that works the handbrake – they are handed and because this was a new set up the old one was no use – so that took 10 mins to work out . Then happiness descended NOT, while I tried to get the pads and springs on the back plate After 10 mins of struggling – I decided to tale off the wheel hub so I could get easy access. After that it was plain sailing until I put the new drums on. hope it helps ps dont forget to put a mark on the back plate where the star screws are for justing the pads - mine have yellow dot to show the way for tightning them up - if not you will send hours working it out
