Without thermostat, flaps (should) remain open. So it (should) run cooler. Well, at operating temperature it'll be the same, but it'll take longer to get there. My oil sits at about 90 degrees c.
If you use it a lot in winter ...yes worth spending big money on a stat . But if you only use it in the summer months Well . Like Morkc68 his motor done all those miles with nothing on .
Cool Let me know how you get on and any tips . I brought a good T4 second hand one which sprung open as I cleaned the c**p off I always meant to have a go at fixing it, it's on the list ............
If these are so sought after and a company in the states is makeing them, why is no one importing them ?
I stand corrected, not come across Deimos before but yes, £120 ( currently out of stock ) Lot of money but if you need one !
I paid less than that to import one, plus a bracket and cable, and import charges..... Came within a week too.
You do need one , you wouldn't drive a normal car with no stat ! Yes it will work but your are shortening the life by creating more wear , if you only drive 500 miles a year it'll take decades to discover this
Probably cost you more if they did import them . Possibly cheaper to just get yours imported yourself . If you got enough of us together on a big order you would get them cheaper . Paul Weeding quite often does that sort of thing
Ok my bad, I thought I had read somewhere the latest type 1 stats operated close to type 4 ranges But we all know what "thought" did
You can't even buy a type 1 thermostat any more. They're discontinued/NLA/out of stock... Mine's failed and I'd given my slightly broken spare away.
Not cheap but they were about £70 when last available as far as I remember: http://www.thesamba.com/vw/classifieds/detail.php?id=1857753
Go digital, IR temp sender, arduino micro board and a servo. I'll even send you the code to program it. Probably about £25 depending on power of the servo. Actually I have the stuff at home, I'll make one if someone wants to try it.
Good shout... I was thinking of something like this. In fact, I have an arduino so could program the chips - could you come up with a circuit board that would suit?
