Our westy doesnt have a thermostat, rods or flaps - the PO removed them for some strange reason and fitted a remote oil cooler.

120,000 miles and the engine is just starting to get tired & ready for a rebuild. Ill reinstate all of the mechanism when I do this :)

  2. My Westy had its removed as well. Think it's coz it's a Cali import and that's the done thing out there!

Someone over there will have a big box of stats, flaps and linkages tucked up for a rainy day!

  4. Has anyone got a west coast import with them fitted?
Just curious as to wether they weren't ever fitted at the factory.

  5. Mine had the bar, flaps and pulley. Was just missing thermostat, cable and bracket.

  6. That's that answered then.
Was just a thought. I've worked in a German car factory. If they can save money with out compromising reliability or saftey, they will.

VWH don’t sell a type 4 thermostat: a type 1 can be used with a modification but it doesn’t open at the correct temperature. You’re close with the price guess.

There is not a lot in it mind, to be really concerned about ...and it's still better than nothing . I have oil temp gauge in and it responds well enough to it's operation ...and beleive me i am a worrier .;)

  9. 20 degrees is quite a bit of difference!

  10. But its not 20 degrees too late, just early

  11. True.

Which means it's going to take longer to warm up and provide full protection, rather than overheat.

    Still not ideal.

  12. I fitted a type 1 stat to our type 4 engine and it cooked it. The stat is permanently expanded and the flaps are held open by the spring - same as not having a stat.
I think the engine runs too hot...

The stat can only open the flaps, if the engine overheats with the flaps open it’s not the stats fault. As I said earlier a type 1 stat does open at the wrong temperature for a Type 4 but it won’t cause it to cook.

  14. I believe that there are 2 types of type 1 stat - one that fails open and one that fails closed.

  15. Indeed. I think a blocked jet or low fuel pressure caused a severe lean condition and the engine overheated. This then ruined the type1 stat. Engine seems to be OK after a carb rebuild though (fingers crossed).

  16. Blimey... You ask a question at breakfast time.. Go to work and find 4 pages waiting for you.. Thanks all plenty to consider there..

Yeh that's right it's that one with the big spring ...bad reports on that one .

  18. Where it says "Repairs"

  19. believe it or not I looked about 3 times and couldn't see it. Its bleedin obvious! Ive got a couple in the garage. Will have a play when ive nowt better to do!

  20. Mine was the same but now got all the parts from Awsome powdercoat in the US. By the way, without the thermostat and flaps does the engine run colder or hotter? Mine runs at 180f in the summer and clearly colder in the winter...I thought I read that the engine (oil temperature) should run at 180 to 220 f ?
