Type 4 heat exchanger damage - What to do?

Discussion in 'Mech Tech' started by allibus, Jul 23, 2014.

  1. Hi all; I've just started to re-furbish my heat exchangers and pondering if I should do anything with this ?

I have a mind to just leave it having spent far too much on the engine rebuild already :(

If there are any simple things I can do to repair this, or an idea of any ill effect it will have on the running of the engine, please let me know

A big - JUST LEAVE IT would be ideal :D

I thought I could take an angle grinder to it and cut it out then have a piece welded in. It would have to be curved and / or cut from a pipe of the same diameter. It appears to be quite thick so not sure how difficult, and how much, this would be.

I don't know what the PO hit but it made a nice hole in the crankcase as well

  2. If you have spent a lot of money on the engine already you dont want to spoil it by leaving this? Even though VW's take a battering I would cut it and weld a new pipe in its place ? Cutting that original pipe, straightening it then rewelding would weaken it too much I think? Its a restriction in the system either way? Sorry not the simple answer but we are all mad driving around in 40+ year old rust buckets anyway aren't we? :)

  3. Dam - I wasn't expecting a sensible answer :) But yes Stan, you are right I'm probable going to fix this by cutting and welding, and yes we are all mad :D

  4. Yeah, you can't leave that - it'd cause a major gas flow restriction!!

  5. Cheers Paul, One more thing to be done then! :(

  6. It's the way it goes dude!!

  7. Ok done that now :) I used a circular hole cutter, a larger one for the donor pipe and it slotted in just fine
