Hi all I have a slight leak on the flywheel oil seal on my Type 4 1800. I have ordered a new seal, the o ring and the felt washer plus a flywheel locking tool. I haven't ordered a new clutch as I am hoping its OK. It was new only 6k miles ago and isn't slipping (I have a 228mm clutch, not sure whether that makes any difference to anything) Any other jobs I should do whilst I am in there? I am already set to sort the gearshift rod bushes and the breather and filler pipes behind the firewall. Also do I need a torqumeister or any other gadget to do the seal? I havent had the flywheel off before and want to make sure I am not stuck for the want of a tool or other essential Cheers Phil
No torquemeister required, they should be done up to 80lbs. Check/clean up the sealing surface on the flywheel. Often there's a slight groove worn which doesn't help the seal. The bigger the groove, the less time the seal will last.
Clutch alignment tool ? Clean any traces of oil off the clutch surfaces whilst its off, should be ok.
i would have 2 x seals...just in case one didnt sit first time.....a seal seating tool maybe or something lik,e that will you drain the engine oil out....maybe oil change, filter (if type4) strainer seal and gaskit set. some tyre levers or jimmy bar to help lever off the wheel...thread lock for when you re attach thrust bearing...perhaps that was inspected when the clutch was done... how are the gear box mounts check out the fuel pipes while you are underneath too.. plenty of tea bags, latex gloves and rags.
As no one has said it, it is good practice to replace the old flywheel to crank bolts, and you'll also need a new bolt locking shim http://www.vwheritage.com/vw_spares...hop.product_pID_182626_lang_EN_country_GB.htm
Thanks Paul. No I didn't have that on my list so very welcome tip. All I need is for the rain to stop over the weekend and I am in business (all the fun is happening on my driveway)
