Type 4 FI engine help

Discussion in 'Mech Tech' started by sima, Nov 2, 2015.

  1. Hi all,
I have recently bought a 72 Late and an engine out of a 78, both from the states. The type 4 is a 2.0l FI unit which, to me looks complete....... Im new to the forum but this is my 3rd air cooled VW. I have no experience with type 4 lumps but rebuilt a 1600 TP type 1 previously. The engine turns over by hand, I was going to start checking it out by testing it's compression, adjusting the valve clearances and then attempting to wire it to fire up outside the van........ Any advice from a F.I. guru?

    Cheers

    Si

'78 may be GE engine code for which tappet adjustment is different as they are hydraulically lifted. Best to check this before you start refurb.
FI engines are sensitive to having the correct distributor.
Is the engine installed in the Bus, if not...
...do you have the ECU that sits in a compartment behind the starter battery, plus the dual relay etc.

^ not forgetting the host of vaccum hoses and pipe connectors :)

  4. I literally took delivery of the bus and engine, shut the garage door and came to work for a week! I will have a look when I get home. I will hazard a guess and say no, There were a couple of multicore cables with connectors laying on top of the block so I m guessing these are the connectors for the dual relay and ECU. If this is the case, what options do I have? Obviously I could seek out the missing items and replace them, are thre any other options? Aftermarket systems that might prove easier to get working or twin carb conversion?

    Cheers

  5. Pictures please, then we can advise what is missing or not as the case may be.

the ECU is quite a large sized board with various electrical components fitted; you'd know if you had that!

Alternatively, go for a set of carbs, it should run fine

  9. I have just swapped from FI to carbs on a 2l. I went for empi twin 40,s. The Webber copies from vwh. I am now more confident In taking the bus on longer runs. The FI was 40 years old and had a cough. It was temperamental and would rarely work first time if disturbed in any way
Performance is good milage is about the same with my driving style

Fix all old pipe work and clean electrical connections. If it runs well keep it
If it faulters it can be a pain to rectify

  10. I am unsure for a couple of days until I get home, I suspect everything is there except the ECU and the Dual relay. Hoses are poor and need replacing...... Im seriously considering the twin carb route. I think I need to have a better look at what I have and what condition the engine/compression is in!

I'm fast becoming a fan of FI, it just starts and goes, quite well actually in the pickup, no popping farting and stuttering, just goes!

  13. I still have the ecu if it comes to needing one.

  14. Thanks, once I get home I will have a good look at it and see where I stand, do you know if the dual relays are readily available anywhere?

  15. Yeh they are cos I looked at buying one when I broke down in France.

Will get you details when I'm home later.

  16. Cheers Andy, I need to take an inventory when I get back to see what I have and need. Is there much to wiring the fi engine into the loom, I imagine positive and switched positive with negative to earth for ECU then usual for coil and dizzy?

  18. You also need to know if yours is a Cali FI model or not, as there is a difference.
