Type 4 Exhaust Heat Shield

Discussion in 'Mech Tech' started by Dicky, Feb 18, 2012.

  1. Just removed the heatshield from my 2 litre as had the rear tin off and found it is rotten along the seams and the asbestos is falling out of it. Thinking of making a replacement for it but what to use? Metal brackets of course but I could do with a sheet material for the body. If I use a metal plate it wouldnt be effective really. Would fibreglass do it?

Anyways - do you other type 4 engined peeps junk these as looking at it it seems the foam engine seal isnt going to last long in close proximity to the silencer.

Your thoughts greatfully recieved (K for someone that points out I can buy one off the shelf!)

  2. 2 layers of ally with an air gap between them should work...

  3. Silver

    Silver Needs points/will pay!

I don't have one on my 2.0L and have just found out that I have a bit missing. Thanks ;)

I've managed 2000 miles and my foam is still there. :)

I'd be interested to see a picture of one in situ.

You don't see many - mainly on dry US and Aussie buses. Mostly they've rotted away.

I don't have one either... Been missioning getting all my tin together and researched buying this bit from VW Classic parts... I think they wanted €95 + post.

I've never seen one in the flesh, but I think there are 2 shown on the Parts Emporium website, might be better than the one you have?

  7. Thanks for the responses. A few options there. Like the idea of the aly material. Not clear if its rigid or bendy but slightly shorter in length than the shield which is approx 690x100mm.

  8. ally is aluminium... pretty rigid in small sections...

  9.
  10. I think the 1600 is a far better engine and you should abandon the transplant idea and sell me you deflector! ")

  11. Your crusty heat shield looks just like mine did.
I made myself a replacement using 2 layers of aluminium sheet cut to the same dimensions. Then sourced some heat resistant cloth, similar to a fire blanket, sandwiched it between the aluminium and pop riveted it all together. It works a treat.

  12. Would it be worth me looking onto making something like this for my type1 engine? I noticed that there are a couple of mysterious screw holes in my rear tin that suggest that *something* should be there, and my rear tin gets a bit warm from the heat rising from my stock exhaust, and anything that inhibits warmth getting into the cool zone has to be good, right?

    Is this heat shield thing also known as a gravel guard? To be sure I'm talking about item 16 on the microfiche;

    (thank you Ratwell)

I've got mine out on the garage floor to and was wondering what to do with it as it is badly rusted, but there's no insulation or asbestos in in though. Should it have?

  14.
  15. No the gravel guard is a different thing to this heat shield. the heat shield is labelled at no 16 from the micro fiche.

Ok, thanks for that. Mine hasn't got a gravel guard then, hence my muffler is on full display to everyone, so to speak. Now I know I've got a rusty heat shield.

  17. The gravel guard usually gets binned when a tow-bar is fitted.
