Type 4 engine

  1. I've a 2.4 big bore Type 4 for my 72 Bay, while it's out a mate suggested warming it up a bit by changing camshaft, it's generally used for fun but I do tow a Puck so need a big fat torque curve rather than a fire-breather, so any cam suggestions welcomed.

I'd be going for a Web grind # 86, this has duration of 270 with 0.423" valve lift. Will give more torque over RPM.

Of course you'll then supposed to upgrade the valves, followers etc.

  3. What cam and vent size you got in it ?

  4. Thanks for your replies.
Currently has a standard cam but with slightly worked heads, nothing too dramatic just what I'd call a stage 2 if you like?

  5. Oh, I'm also running a pair of 40HPMX Empis with an Empi exhaust (soon to be changed as it's too noisy).

What did you have done to the heads?

  7. what are the 40HPMX Empis like as they don`t get a good press ?

  8. The heads are lightly ported and have had bigger valves fitted, I can't give exact details as they were bought secondhand.
The carbs were bought new.........never again!
I have a 73 Bay too with a 1641 Vege engine running Weber 40's and they are far better in my opinion.

  9. A better exhust system and a good cam will make huge difference.

  10. 2nd vote for a web 86a, and a set of scat lube-a-lobe lifters

What exactly have you done to the heads? bigger valves or just a P&P to increase the flow?

  11. Who sells such a cam?

  12. You could try Stateside Tuning, very helpful and supply Webcam cams, cut to length pushrods and the lube lobe lifters (little oil hole in the middle). I put the 086 in mine, very pleased with it. The Empi exhaust are just about the worst for Type 4 motors if many reviews are to be believed...Turbo Thomas look nice but out of my budget!
A good forum for tech info is the Type4rum (google)...lots of useful info on there and helpful too.
