Type 4 cylinder head

Discussion in 'Mech Tech' started by bluething, Feb 16, 2014.

  1. Well the head is off and it's bad news for the inlet seats. Both seem to have sunk. Cylinder 1 is well down and it leaks like a good one. Shows evidence of guide wear too.

There's no cracks to be seen and all of the studs seem to be pretty good. Is it worth getting someone to put new valves in it or should I just bite the bullet and get a new one?

    Cheers

The castings on the new Amex ones leave a lot to be desired apparently, @Paul Weeding will know more, try Jim at TES and see if he can rebuild it? His machining has a good rep.

  3. The AMC heads, as a bit hit n miss by all accounts... seats can fall out, and the guides aren't hard enough and wear out quickly!! Jim at staeside uses them as cores for reworking into big valve heads!!

If your seats have sunk, then the heads are only good for reworking to big valve heads, as oversized seats for std valves are only a few thou bigger!!

  4. Ah okay. They're well below the face of the cylinder head. Looking like I'm going to have to get a new one :/
Cheers for the responses guy's! :)

  6. Just be aware that you must've been running hot for it to do this...

So you will have been running lean, most likely cause is an air leak... either on the inlet manifold, or I'm guessing that you still had the "head gaskets" fitted? These are renowned for causing cylinder to head air leaks!!

  7. The previous owner had some very leaky carbs on it. It wouldn't run right at all. The valves were tight so after I changed the carbs over, I kept an eye on them. The last check showed one had closed up by an alarming amount so I'm guessing it's about to give way. There's a good 3/4 mm in spring height between he exhaust and inlet. Thankfully nothing's dropped off :)
