I’ve replied in your other thread. Check that you can get bearings before you align bore the case. A 1700 crankcase is the strongest of all Type 4 engines and if you have one available that is what I would use. I have an aligned bored CJ crankcase here that you could have - but I’m in France.

Good to know. Purely by chance mine was built with a 1700 case :)

  3. 412 and 914's use D-Jetronic for the FI motors , these cams are fitted to work with this system and are very mild for that reason ,the MPS (manifold pressure sensor ) has no tolerance for a cam with a higher spec and as far as I remember no one has ventured into a solution due to several reasons.
Along came L-Jetronic on the 914 1.8 in 1975 and was a step from the now troubled old D-jectronic , folks found they could increase capacity and use a specific mild spec cam to good result , bored out throttle bodies or custom units are common like the one Gowesty sells or for more mild applications I believe the T25 one had a larger bore and fits ..further step ahead really.
As mentioned there appears to be no info on cam spec from between the 2 systems used on the 914 motor or any T4 that I have ever seen but suspect it the L-Jetronic cam was upgraded to work with that system is more adaptable to vacuum fluctuations, the D-jet has no tolerance for that as mentioned.
I know from experience the T4 carb cams work ok with anything above the Solex's ,cheers.

  4. Why not ? as the 1.7 case is the strongest VW made ,pick up a used for cheap ,save on line bore and fancy main bearing cost for OS case bearing ,cheers.

I agree with your comments but the thread is 2½ year old and Mike has probably got it sorted by now, or bought a T6 or something. And he hasn’t been on TLB since last year.
