type 4 1800 sounds like there is a moth in the engine bay?

  1. Hi there,

Just recommissioning my t2 type 4 after a winter snooze and it now sounds rough as.
I had it running ok before the winter and had the timing set.
I took it out for a drive and it ran ok last week but a few days later it has developed 2 faults,

Firstly there is a sound a bit like a chain rubbing, on tickover

secondly when its underload there is a sound like a moth fluttering in the engine bay?

    any ideas?

    cheers

Sounds like you have a loose chain and a moth in the engine bay. Is this a boat?

  3. No idea I'm afraid but there'll be someone along who might. Can you take a video and post it up?.....might help for a better diagnosis.

Seriously, both could be alternator. If nobody comes up with a better idea, try removing the alt belt and see if it goes away. You can take for a drive.

  5. Do you have a mesh cover over the engine fan?

If not check a mouse or some such critter hasent nested in your engine fan

  6. Timing scale always hits fan

  7. Timing scale would probably be the 'moth' sound. Also check your fan, is it wobbling or spinning straight as an arrow?

If its wobbling then its off balance and rubbing on the fan shroud

  8. Agree with above:)

It sounds like you haven't had the lid open for a listen, but heard the noises while driving?
If it's coming from around the fan housing and doesn't stop when you remove the alternator belt, as bodyrock suggested it may be the fan hub loose on the crank. This is a bugger to tighten up in situ because of course the engine will turn. But it will tighten with a rattle gun if you have one or know someone who does/local garage. The fan runs so close to the housing you might not even see it's off kilter.

  11. HB on... gearbox in gear... easy peasy... unless it's an auto...

  12. To tighten the bolt?

Doesn't work for me. :) But then I have a rattle gun...

  14. Yeah, the centre bolt on the fan...

  15. Could of done with that trick last week on the way to work. One for the memory banks.
