Does anyone know what the octane rating of fuel was when the type 1 engine was new and fresh? Maybe thats the reason for people reporting better fuel economy?
They were all built with lower comp to suit poorer fuels I have the recommended star rating sticker somewhere in my service folder ...
And here IMO is the reason some 1600's go really well and some struggle. I bought some heads from TES but didn't notice he'd machined them, they were supposed to be new. The rebuilt engine did nothing in 4th unless it was downhill. Eventually I sussed it, stripped the engine and replaced the heads with unmachined ones and it went like stink. The only difference was the compression ratio.
