    No debate - I don't wear one.
I never drive without a seatbelt and I always wear a helmet snowboarding and playing hockey, but I have never worn a cycle helmet.

Don't let the kids out without one though :) o_O

So when you fall off and knock yourself out when you're out with the kids you expect them to deal with the situation?

    I know, I know!! :)

Strange that I don't think the risks are high. I cycle only back roads and then in the park.

If I were into mountain biking, or rode a bike in London, I would definitely wear one.

Sorry it's just a bug bear of mine, seen too many innocuous accidents, nobody ever sets out with the intention of having one but......

  14. @CollyP Its a free choice so not going to say you should but I do agree with @Flakey - by the way how do you persuade your kids to do something you don't?

Its always interesting to see different peoples perception of risk, the trouble is you're just as likely to fall off on back roads as anywhere, having cracked two helmets in half from falling off in what seemed rather tame places (on a country lane and just coming back onto the road from a trail) I always wear one, as does my wife and 4 yr old boy but then he does want to be a mountain biker like his dad :)

    Risk is inherent in life.
I grew up riding bikes (as did we all). I mean proper BMX on a track with whoops and table tops: I did the lot. My cycling these days is very tame by comparison. My kids say I still ride like a teenager.
For example - how risky is riding a marshmallow bike through a soft cloud with pillows either side? Not very risky right? No helmet required.
Compare that to the other analogy of riding through Central London - risk central - helmet required.

As for the question about how do I get the kids to do something I don't - they do what I tell them to do!!!

  16. I really dislike being told about life and risk … but hey what do I know about that sort of thing :) neither am I going to tell you about parenting we all have our own approach

  17. You've ordered what? the lycra or the chamois butter?
I'd order both at the same time as your On One Lurcher Carbon Fibre 29er and have it all delivered to your door!
P.S. I will deny all knowledge of this conversation in front of Lou when she finds out how much you've just spent..........
PPS. Dont forget a good helmet.

i used to ride a lot years ago, never owned or wore a helmet probably never would now, it does however amaze me that by law you don't have to (yet can easily reach over 30mph - infact down a big hill by me i had 52 once...) yet on a moped limited to 30mph you have to wear one.

  19. Had my bike just over a year now and love it. And I do have the helmet agghh and also the padded pants. A serious must when doing 20 mile off roader.

  20. Fab photos @WoodyLubber . Glad to have met you all on our first TLB camp. Not sure I'd be up to a 26 mile bike ride but I'd happily meet you at the odd watering hole on the next one ;-)
