Time for a new engine

Discussion in 'General Discussion' started by dookie, Aug 20, 2020.

  1. Over the last year I've come to the conclusion to buy a new engine. Has anyone used a good company they could recommend? I've seen prices from £1200 to £3000. I dont want to be ripped off but I dont want to buy crap

    Cheers

  2. What's wrong with the one you have?

  6. As above, what wrong with yours? and what type is it? You may be able to find a good engine builder that will re build your own engine reasonably. If your engine is the original one (doubtful) it will pay you to retain the numbers and have it re built.

  7. Yes

  8. The major one is cylinder 3 has got to hot and become soft so the valves are always open, and there are so many little issues it works out cheaper to replace it then but all the bits to fix it.

The engine is a 1600 twin port

  9. It nothing special and all i want is something similar

Those manifold boots have seen better days!
I'd imagine its got a hell of an air leak?

  12. ^this. Engines/heads don't overheat for no reason.

Going to be much cheaper to fix the existing engine than take a punt on a "new" one.

  13. Overall it's not set up very well - 009 , crap air filter , filter in the engine bay ,lpg etc etc ...

That said JK heritage rebuilds seem favourite at the moment.
    BUT
First step would be to find out why it went pop in the first place , my guess would be a combination of the list above ...

I am very happy with my new(ish) JK preservation parts engine. I dont think I would for one moment contemplate destroying it with LPG.

You would be better off buying two sets of the cheapest set of cylinder heads you can find and slapping one on now, and another when the LPG trashes it again.

LPG ISNT A SAVING IF IT COSTS YOU THE ENGINE !!!

One thing that the breather system does if you use a stock oil filler with a 20mm ID hose, or even better an oil bath air cleaner, is that the fat breather tube carries a spray of oil into the intake,
and in the case of the oil bath, the filter also releases oil spray.
It is believed by some in the USA that this assists in eliminating some of the 'dryness' of burning LPG and may help extend the life of valves.

  16. I think the lpg has done it. I used to drive about 60 miles every day and it was costing me a fortune in petrol so that's why I had it.

  17. I was in that situation a few years ago . Easiest solution was to buy a banger for a few hundred quid ...

  18. Tbh even you get a core exchange the fan housing needs to be a proper doghouse one, air filter ect
Borrow a compression tester and see what happens

  19. I could of done that by I wanted to drive the van. I dont like the idea of vans just being used for special occasions and weekend trips. I know that's not going to be a popular opinion
