Tight spot when turning crank

Discussion in 'Mech Tech' started by D5andy, Oct 17, 2015.

  1. Hey it's got to the time again the bus is back and the engine I rebuilt 2yrs back is bolted back in

Thing is when I turn the crank by hand theres a definite tight spot

I put some oil down the plugs but haven't yet put the first dose of oil in

So its just the assembly lube that I am turning it with

Should I be worried? Do I strip it back down and start again

Way back when I first assembled it one of the shells moved when I was bolting it up but I undid it and got it back on the dowel, once I realised my error....

My thinking is that perhaps that has caused the tight spot... Do i need to / Should I replace the shells?

I am just thinking of more things to stop me cracking on,

Hmm - you know it too or you wouldn't have been looking for tight spots... :(

  3. :( sadly so, but wouldn't it be tight all the way round if it were the shells

It only feels tight on like the 4th rotation

You got me there, having not done this myself I honestly don't know first hand, but people always talk of a tight "spot".

4th rotation? It would be every rotation.

  6. 4th rotation would be cam/valve train related

  7. So one cylinder is going to have a sticky lifter/valve...

I'm assuming the "nipped" shell was nice and free once you had re-seated it properly? :)

It can be tight if the crank is slightly elliptical.

But every 4th rotation sounds more like something in the camshaft department, or valves. Especially if that is actually every second rotation of the engine.

If it has been sitting for years with assembly lube then it probably has places with no lubrication now.

It could be worth trying to rig up some oiler feeding into the oil pressure switch which can fill the engine with pressurised oil - like a variant on a garden sprayer that can be screwed in....

  9. Yep it all seemed fine once I got it seated - crank rotated freely

I am wondering about the rocker assembly on one of the head it didn't sit quite right when I poor it back together... Slightly wonky shaft now I cast my mind back... Could that be it?

  10. Think tomorrow's job will be to slack the rocker arm assemblies off and see if that eases the tight fourth rotation

Feeling a little less worried now
