Hmmmm. I don't know, I think the monarchy are intrinsically part of our national identity as Brits, they are part of who we are. I kind of like being British, not in an all nationalistic way, but it's who I am and I don't feel horrendously embarrassed by that. The Royal Family don't really inconvenience me, and to be honest I doubt my taxes are going to do down if there's a revolution and I'm suddenly ruled by President May instead (although I'm guessing she would be cheaper to run? ). I didn't even realise that there was another wedding last week until one of me mates mentioned it had happened, so I guess if that's what a few quid of my last wage packet's tax went on, well fair enough. Do I like 'em? Yeah I suppose I do, if only because it give us something that other countries still find appealing about Britain.... they probably quite like Stonehenge and Salisbury cathedral too, and I probably pay for that in some way or other as well. Which one got married, out of interest?
Certainly appears to do a lot for the Mysterious Payments industry Take my hat off to Camilla, though, who unfortunately couldn't attend the wedding due to her having to nip out for a packet of fags
The Queen is important as head of state and she has met more world leaders in the last 65 years than any politician I could think of. The rest of them are just relatives and are of no consequence whatsoever apart, possibly, from Brian and his firstborn.
While this is true, at the other end of the scale you have brown nosing politicians who practically wet their knicks in their eagerness to suck up to the Royals. Our media aren’t much better. To be quite honest, the House Of Windsor doesn’t pee me off so much as the media’s sycophantic obsession with them. The Royals, I can take them or leave them. They are no better than you or I. Just massively privileged. End of.
How exactly? Not being argumentative, just curious because I see that said time and again? Are we saying that without her we would see a massive drop in the country’s revenue? How exactly, and how much?
Also you can read here https://www.google.co.uk/amp/s/www....tion-to-the-british-economy-10491277.html?amp Other sources suggest she brings £1.8B to the U.K. economy
But the French make loads more out of tourism than we do and they sorted out their monarchy hundreds of years ago.
This is the Queen's impact , I don't suppose anyone comes to the UK as a tourist to see the Duke of Porks two over entitled brats.
the queen is someone the whole country ( generally ) likes - why because as head of state she is blameless because shes not a politician she doesn,t create a mess like some presidents do We have a head of state we can be proud of not like most countries
That’s not an argument that holds any water. I was in Paris last year. It was pretty chocka with tourists. I don’t believe that the US suffers much from lack of tourists either.
But France is 3 x the size of the U.K. but only 2m more people. The IMF also believe the U.K. economy is slightly ahead the French. The U.K. employment rate is much higher at 73.7% where France is 64.1% however French are more productive. The U.K. is also the worlds favourite for foreign investment (2016). Back to tourism. The French have better weather, better ski resorts so unsurprisingly you would expect them to have better tourism. According to visit www.statista the U.K. tourism industry is valued at £217B whereas France was €198B https://www.statista.com/topics/3768/travel-and-tourism-in-france/ https://www.statista.com/topics/3269/travel-and-tourism-in-the-united-kingdom-uk/
i'm in london every day... its pretty chocka with tourists in fact, they get on my wick, because they walk so slowly
If only someone had mentioned the negative impact on their future tourism industry two hundred years ago . . .
