I've just had my first price from a body shop to respray my camper and lets just say it took me by surprise and I will be needing a stiff drink tonight. As shown in my resto thread I had the van soda blasted and coated in high build. I have had the following full replacement panels fitted, Complete front panel Two new tubs and arches A pair of new cab doors Both complete quarters replaced Two new rear corners complete A new centre panel on the drivers side rhd Replaced all the sills and jacking points Replaced 40% of the gutters Replaced the cargo floor I am going to paint and under seal the van and paint the cargo/cab floor myself the van has also been lead loaded using around thirty sticks of lead and I was expecting to receive quotes around 3k or so. They have quoted me £4800 - £5k cash does this sound right or are they trying to take me for a ride? I'm going to need plenty of antiseptic to take the sting out of this one
It was a cash price so no actual list of works but he did say he would doing the following Two coats of primer Black twice Top half white Bottom half blue Coat of laq Inside and out
I think you should get a look at some vans they did a few years ago and see if they still look good. Paying a bit more for a really good quality paint job is better value than a slightly cheaper job which may need redoing in thre or four years.
I had a t4 builders van done a couple of years ago for £3000 and I thought that was steep! The bay will have to wait then ! Mind you it still oozes class which is more than I can say for the t4
To be fair I think your quote was ball park to be honest.. mine is currently in for a few corner fixes, battery tray, gutters, and window ledges (if that's what they are called... I've been priced £700 for the strip down, £300 for the rebuild... and the body work / top half paint / bottom over flash / laq / polish is coming in around £1500 - 2000 (this is mainly outside only (just the window inners are being done inside..... so adding the additional effort for the primer, rub down, paint on, rub down, laq, and final rub down and polish... I think you would be hitting them figures in my opinion... Hope you have a nice scotch to sample....
I've got another two quotes Come in yet i will then weigh my options up and go for the one in the middle. I have been to a few body shops and most of them look like Marmite holes if I'm honest only a few of them had ovens which are the ones pricing the job. Its really hard to find somewhere decent
I had a respray and some bodywork done for £5.5K including parts. But the paint has cracked down all the seams. So I will not recommend that paint shop despite the fact that their bodywork was excellent , the paintjob looked good for a couple of years and now I am fighting the cracks.
Whereabouts are you based? I am sure some people on here could help suggest places... I think I was almost burnt by someone, but through the help of another known VW supplier, I have got a nice place in Oldham now who knock out good stuff... happy to share my experience with you once it comes out.... due back next week or the week after
I got one quote for 4-5k just paint, if I done all the bodywork .. No thanks. Gonna get the van to the point it's ready to paint.. Then weigh up my options. Painting it myself is at the top of the list.
Figure would seem reasonable to me, just painting around all the door and window returns can swallow up quite a chunk of time. Only bit I'd take issue with is the suitability of Hammerite for painting the underside...two coats minimum to provide a surface seal and once its hardened it can crack on areas subject to vibration or impact of gravel etc.
it sounds like you've done much of the prep already....I think £5K for primer, final flatting, top coat and lacquer is too dear...fair enough if you've just tacked the panels on and need hours and hours of seam sealing, filler work etc....it's a labour intensive process, but once again, i think the scene tax is rearing it's ugly head Hammerite is rubbish IMO
