The All New, New "What have you done to your Bay today" thread.

  1. I can now tell the time and the oil temperature. Although, need to go for a run tomorrow to see if the oil temp is working OK. But not too fast, in case we encounter some time dilation effects, and the clock reads the wrong time when we get back.

Think I fixed the random misfire/backfire...or maybe I've just stopped it happening for today. Who knows

Sat in it with a coffee trying to get the love back for it.

I took mine for an Italian decoke the other day - 20 miles at 75mph. :)
It made quite a difference, I do too much cold engine driving.

Fitted a locking latch on the engine bay, changed the air filter (little jobs before a big trip) and took it for a drive. Oskar likes watching me tinker! IMG_3710.jpeg

Glad I'm not the only one who does that!

  9. See, a border collie would've changed your air filter, changed the oil and plugs and set the ignition timing for you...

And a badly trained border collie would have permanently rearranged the interior.

  12. A border collie would've advised you not to buy a crusty old van in the first place...

So a little run out for an ice cream on Saturday ended badly.

The engine decided to pop out number 4 spark plug. I let it cool down a bit and refitted said plug.

I was cursing myself for being so poor at the spanner’s, I couldn’t even fit a spark plug.

Post 99 and feeling smug about the fix - another pop and the plug shot out again.

I decided to limp him home - luckily not too far and reassess.

Closer inspection on Sunday revealed the thread in the cylinder has stripped quite spectacularly.

So what did I do to my Bay today ? I found someone who can do a thread repair for me. Timesert I think.

Hopefully sourced a decent head through the forum too - that’s probably a better plan.

I really must dig deep and treat myself to a recon engine.

Drove over three speed bumps in a row in a boatyard.

First two at about 10mph. Rear suspension made a racket but no other problems. Slowed right down for the third and whacked the silencer box hard instead as the bus came down again before clearing the bump which it did at 10mph..
Its cracked the welds I did on the silencer box . So it makes more noises and better backfires.

Sometimes I wonder if I should install some flexi exhaust tubing before the silencer box..

  15. Nah , just go back to stock height - it's the future

It would be great if somebody had not done cut and twist lowering in 2005.
Then I would have to put up with the weirdness of having an anti roll bar too.

A new silencer box every 10 years is still cheaper than a new front beam.. Just bought a silencer box as I am a bit short of free time for welding etc. between now and various trips.

I have a set of maintenance that has been piling up on my boat over the weekend before Techenders ... VHF aerial, wind instrument, masthead light, main halyard, rigging , engine descale and service, antifoul hull, replace rudder bushings, paint deck , fuse box tidyup if there is time ....

You know what they say Mike, old buses, young women and boats need constant attention.
