@Norris, your engine might be different to mine (type 4, 2ltr) but when I put the engine back, I couldn't get enough space to fit past the bell housing input shaft at the front and the oil dipstick bellows and filler with the back of the van. I ended up taking them off, but refitted them with the engine mount bar not connected on one side (so engine a bit lobsided and still in the jack) to allow refitting of said dipstick bellows and filler more easily. Might have been a stupid way, but that is how I managed, others with more experience can happily shoot me down if there is a better way:)

I had enough fun taking the engine out. I'm anticipating fun getting it back in again

Lower the back end of the gearbox, bolt engine to it, hinge both back up. That also sorts scraping it past the bar mounts on the chassis and makes it easier to mate the engine to the box, saves scraping new fan housing paint on the inside of the rear of the engine bay... Win, win, win, win, win...

It's a faff putting the hanger bolts back in blind the first time but worth it IMO. Top tip, reach around the non-starter side for both bolts... lots of extensions on your socket wrench.
If you have the back end jacked up this also levels things out which again makes things easier.

It's easier with two trolley jacks! but I only had one and always did it this way.

Lovely day for an air out and a systems check.

Leisure battery voltage good. I can hear the VSR alternating between the leisure and the starter circuits. They have been run down a little because the cover's been on covering the panels for the last couple of months.

Propex has been a trusty companion now since 2014. Tempting fate, but it's been super reliable.

After thoroughly searching the garage for the passengers side door seal, I decided I had lost it. Then sat down in the house and as I sat down noticed I had stashed it under a chair.

So I went out and fitted the passenger side door seal to my bus, after removing the old glue with panel wipe and a wooden stick to abrade it. Despite the truth that stock seals do not need glue all round , the new Brazilian seals definitely needed gluing into the groove, as they lack the lip on the outer edge of the seal that grips on the edge of the door on the original seals. But they are really nice and soft.

    You try that Autoglym stuff?

  16. I may actually have some somewhere. I’ll have a look tomorrow. Canvas looks reasonably ok after a scrub. Mould on the poptop was the main thing - good waxing tomorrow!

Also, a strong mix of bleach and warm water does well. Got to do it a couple of times, though.

Fitted 25cm of proper wire reinforced 19mm ID EPDM hose as a breather hose, to replace some PVC kinked stuff I had to bodge on. It fights back , had to use a longish piece to get it to stop flicking the air cleaner off the stand with all the force you need to bend it twice in a short distance.
But unlike the soft hose sold by e.g. JK, the wire stiffens it so it does not kink shut.

My previous attempt with the wire reinforced twin wall neoprene air hose failed, engine vibration where it leaves the air cleaner chewed the outer wall up, and the inside twisted up so the inner diameter of the hose ended up about the same diameter as an EMPI shiny breather hose.

  19. This looks like the route I shall have to follow when I replace my collapsed and distorted breather hose.
