Yesterday I made a new gasket for the carburettor float bowl out of some gasket paper.
I also recieved a flexible extension for the Dremel to have a go at the rust on the tank vent pipes in the air scoops.

After describing my gearbox packaging, which apparently was less amusing than some, Bears Motorsport were able to tell me my gearbox is on the bench in the process of being stripped down.

Today I had to go into work and spend a day poking at settings on a monster collection of software that wasnt talking to itself, about 10 computers all talking to each other, Ethernet, three CAN buses, two RS485 controls for electric thrusters on an electric powered boat. Fortunately it appears to be mostly the settings that were wrong so it might all come together on Monday.

  5. Did you put your hands on your hips when using the word "thruster"?

  7. Gave the door mirrors a bit of a refurb as they were starting to look a little tatty. Got a feeling this O/S one is an O/G VW, (N/S is a Hagus). Replacement wide angle glass off eBay, currently selling at just £5.54 a piece if you buy a pair... https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/372202586074?epid=1969685329&hash=item56a900bfda:g:ey4AAOSwe6ZaZywR

Not much effort required to lever out the old glass, just a smear of adhesive around the edges...
All cleaned up, note the generous thread length on this O/G example...
Double sided tape included with the glass, contact area is limited due to the concave housing but seems to give more than enough adhesion...
Not too shabby for 25+ years old after a good polish...
Small but noticeable gap around the new glass in the Hagus mirror...
But a lovely fit in the original VW frame...

All in all I'm very happy, for less than £12 the improvement in clarity and viewing angle makes this a recommended bargain upgrade

  8. Come now you must know it's a wash and Polish (credit to @Baysearcher) for the joke, still makes me chuckle.

  9. Gonna give this a go, our bus is LHD and I've never got the offside mirror into a position where it's of any use:thumbsup:

I did mine a few months ago and being a LHD as well it made a huge difference. I've also recently turned the mirrors horizontally rather than vertically as @Devon233 shows and that improved my visability even more.

Started poking at the rust on the breather pipes in the air vent with a flexible Dremel extension drive.
The rather well used wire brush fell apart in seconds, but the rust turned out to be more spectacular paint bubbles than actually eating the metal.

Found more scabs on the inside of the body panel.

So I have bought a set of new brushes off eBay, and also a collet nut for the Dremel, as my father had fitted a small three jaw chuck which is too long to fit inside the cup on the Dremel end of the flexi drive.

  14. I’m doing everything except that…for now.

The plan is to finish the van and have the engine installed so it can be driven to the welder, then it won’t take me long to paint up his work.

  16. Hope you got it painted evenly, it will be out of balance, if not ;)

  17. For the one with the gap, try some transparent mastic (Polycell used to do a little squeezy bottle). Used it to fix the cracked plastic surround in my old ones.

Got out the trusty ball pein hammer and had a go inside the nearside rear wheel arch. And almost immediately , a chunk of stuff parted company ...
Basically where the seatbelt attachment point would have been under the sink and water storage unit .. And then somebody had put a neat rectangular piece of fibreglass over it inside the bus.. Part way through grinding,

Oh its horrible, the underseal clogs the sanding disk, and the metal is thin. Patched with a rectangular bit of metal. This is going to need a full - on reconstruction both sides in the next few years. ...

    20211024_132219.jpg

Later I discovered the inner panel to my left was also full of holes :-(

Then my angle grinder tripped the 16 amp breaker in the bus and the the 32 amp main breaker on the circuit in the house, .. the wire has gone hard and keeps ending up shorting inside the strain relief at the angle grinder end.. Time to replace the wire...

    Then it started raining .

Oh well, making odd bits of metal for patching is another day ...

Now trying out beers from Alfred's Brewery in Winchester. So far nice hard water Winchester pale ale and DOM BOC amber ale. I will be going back to see them soon..
