    Pedant alert: They're not steam engines! They run on paraffin or something similar. Mostly used to drive generators before mains electricity became widespread.

    Oops, I stand corrected. :) Whatever they run on though they have an almost hypnotic effect, I could (did) stand and watch them for ages.
