Well that’s a good call up cycling the old, I fitted some Brazilian ones on my xo and the drums rubbed for a while ... well more than a while And I had to skim the drum edges down with a hard sanding disc .. reuse parts where possible indeed yes
I heard your engine at a Techenders a few years ago. Sounded pretty bad. What was the problem in the end?
My mate’s t4 California engine seized on the way home from a trip the other day. It’s a 2.4 diesel. We’re not sure why it seized yet. But I suspect timing chain/belt. Just shy of 200k miles on the clock. I suppose he needs to drain oil to see if there are any bits of engine in there. But not sure what to do next. Get rebuilt, buy lower mileage engine 2nd hand, or recon off the shelf. who sells them at reasonable prices? Some places take the old one in exchange as long as it’s ‘serviceable’. What constitutes an engine that isn’t serviceable? A hole in the crank case or something like that?
If an engine, a type 4 for example has seen align bore to (I think) +0.75mm on the main bearing saddles this takes it out of tolerance and beyond use.
You can get a used one with about 150,000 miles on it. From Germany for about 500 pound. Plus sending. They’re everywhere. . Found one for a friend about two or three years ago. Don’t know the prices in the UK.If it doesn’t spin it’s not serviceable.
The problem with an off the shelf engine is you the customer cant see what's been done inside the engine and what parts have been used. When I build a motor for people you get step by step photo's sent to you so you can see what's going on as its being built
Back to type 4 engines, another vote for VW Engine Co. from me. Spoke to them at length before getting a swap out 1800, found them very knowledgeable and helpful.
Depending on the engine place, even an engine that has a hole in it may be exchanged in return for much less cash than an engine in one piece. e.g. The Engine Shop took an engine with three pistons, three con rods and a hole in the case as an exchange. And they still gave me £150. . That was based on a deal where I paid a non-exchange price based on a mostly new engine, and they offered to buy the old engine off me.
No . from Kleinanzeigen. It means small ads in German. It’s an eBay based free listing. If you need some help please PM me. I’m in Spain. But I buy stuff from them all the time. Years ago are used to find so much VW t2 lots for super cheap. But I haven’t been looking as of late because there was no need. Here’s a link. They’re all very honest. They’re German. And in the normal days. I am there half a year. But I’m stuck on a beach town in Spain right now. You could also look on eBay. Germany. Copy the listing number. And paste it into eBay UK. And if it works you can buy from them. What year is it. That matters as of price ? https://www.ebay-kleinanzeigen.de/s-vw-2.4-motor-diesel/k0
Apparently you can get a brand new T4 case: https://www.ahnendorp.com/VW-Type-4...gine-Case-VW-Typ-4-used-and-rebuild-2456.html If I lived in the UK, I would be on the Eurostar right now, somewhere under the English Channel with that thing on my lap. I wouldn't order one to have it shipped to the USA because things like that often get mauled in customs and I would also have to see it to believe it. As a skeptical friend asked me, "Why are they putting blurry stock photos on their site instead of photos of rows of pristine Type 4 cases"? "Why aren't there close up photos of perfectly round main bearing bores and perfectly machined surfaces"? Like OMG!, followed by a photo of a row of perfectly round lifter bores. Maybe because it doesn't exist or maybe because it's just not that special if you don't live in a place where you are cleaning up the bores on an old case with all 9,000 of your taste buds like it's the last one on earth. Still, I am a Curious George indeed.
