Swamp engine worthy of a rebuild...?

  1. 914 1800 engine with big valve heads and domed pistons. It was full of water, didn't turn by hand, I've just started to take it apart and found this...

    A broken valve stem, there is a bolt jammed between the valve and the head;

    Some very rusty valves;

    Some very rusty barrels and pistons. A peer into the case and the rods look very rusty. I also found that the pushrod tube retaining wires hadn't been installed properly so the pushrods all have a 10mm wide 2mm deep groove machined into them!

    I haven't split the case yet, if it's saveable I'm going to see if the heads are saveable too and will just fit a replacement crank and rods, a new cam and a 1911 b+p set
    :)

  2. It'll be saveable... I bought a parts engine like that, albeit a 1700 914... Pretty much the same condition too

    Crank looked rusty as muck but the journals were still nice and shiny :cool:

  3. Quick scrub with a wire brush, that'll come up nicely :thumbsup:

    Seriously, as Paul says, surprising what you can salvage from these things, especially if it's relatively rare - you've got the incentive!

  4. many years ago i rebuilt a ford engine that the pistons had rusted so much they had to be smashed out, down to the skill of the machining it was a bloody good engine that not alot could beat. i would say thats saveable..........
