Exhaust was blowing so i removed manifold to reseat and check copper gasket hadn't shifted, refitting resulted in nut not grabbing, thread was worn so took manifold off again and stud is stripped, any ideas how i can get it out? also where can i get new studs?

Will mole grips not shift it, and perhaps some heat if you struggle.

i thought you would know that Rick :-

  4. I have a stud extractor, could post but not that much to buy.

Think you will still need heat on it

  6. good luck dude.... I've had heads on the bench with the oxy torch on them and not managed to shift them...

Quite often the easiest thing to do is to drill the stud out and fit a new one

new studs are available from heritage, and coolair

  7. i like the weld a nut on the end tecnique

  8.
  9. If all else fails you can try rethreading it and putting a slightly smaller nut on the end

you're all gonna call me the bodgemeister extreme..... the manifold is approx 300mm deep....... grind it down to 100mm so stud pokes through more and good thread shows then new nut and bob's your uncle and fanny's your aunt.
obviously i tried all off the above before i posted on here, had a bit of a discussion with zed and this was an idea we both thought may work, i've plenty of spare manifolds so it's no biggie, if and when i get the engine out to do the autobox i can rectify it properly, but right now it drives and don't blow too bad so it will do.

  11. Top bodging, probably a lot less work than getting the stud out.

Top "risk free" repair Ricky. Sometime bodging is the only solution.

yep, risk free bodge indeed, i couldn't risk not getting to techenders on friday, it seems a bit extreme but it worked, the push rod seals are dripping well (zed you asked which end - it's the head end but only one side)

I might have some viton seals - I'll have a look.

  16. Isn't viton like viagra?

para, once drove an escort for weeks with no rear brakes and mole grips on the flexis as the rear cylinders were leaking so you ain't far off my bodging past....
dave, yep the ones we changed and used the cheap black ones didn't last long as you predicted......the green ones are still fine....
