Starting issues...

  1. MadFrankie, thanks for that, I shall have a look after work tonight and see what I can find.

I had the bus in a garage for a while and they changed all my Plugs, leads and dizzy cap.

    I have Electronic Ignition.

The garage said when I collected it that they "tidied up the relay so it should work if I use the bus, but if I let it sit there it may fail" Does this sound like rubbish to you, because it does to me. I'm a Mechanical Engineer by trade, just not a car one (aircraft one!) and whilst i'm not Electically minded i'm not a complete fool. When they said that to me I thought *they've probably taped it up...*

    Said garage no longer exists...

By relay he means the double relay you mentioned? Where is this located and what price am I looking at? I'm not off out to buy one, just interested. Pictures of one in situ are good! :)

  2. Hi, sounds like he was winging it. The double relay is just a load of wires that pass current at certain times to get the FI going.

It either works or it doesn't. Yes, old vans might be intermittent if there's a bad connection and a 'little wiggle' will fix it but it won't degrade or not work just because you've left it.

If you look at the engine the double relay is top left as you look at it, on the back wall of the engine bay. It has a grey top, (if it's the original one), and has two sets of wires going to it, one side all grey and the other multi coloured.

Haven't got any pics to hand as I'm on my mobile but can find one or two tomorrow when I'm on my laptop if you need.

  3. I know where you mean, silver plug thingy, i've looked at that a few times but dismissed it as it looked merely like a plug, I shall have a closer look when i'm not going to get soaked doing so!

  4. This thing...look normal to you?

  5. Yup, that's the fella...Looks fine to me. I'd always recommend taking the plugs off the bottom and giving all connections a little polish to make sure they are ok...

  6. These important? They are looking pretty manky...

Sound proofing looks a bit limp as well :-(

they are fuel expansion hoses going up to the vents, although not pressurised they need changing, the wooden baffles for soundproofing aren't critical i don't even have any but make sure they can't drop or rub anything.

  8. They are fuel expansion hoses, which are only needed when you get your van actually working!

As long as they are connected they should be fine, you'll know if they are dodgy if you idle funny etc.

  11. Well, if it's running now I'd suggest it's a dodgy wire somewhere and you're fiddlings have just got the connections back again.

I would just shrug your shoulders and congratulate yourself on fixing it

Has it been timed, seems to be idling quite fast.

  12. It's idling a little slower now i've connected one of the vacuum hoses that was dangling off.

I suppose at least for a while I can (if the weather turns) work on the fact I have no roof!

  13. Ahhh, that could also be why it's running fast. My vacuum hoses / fuel expansion hoses are all in but aren't exactly the tightest fit but it runs just fine. Think the pipes are 3mm.

  14. I'm just assuming mine are all in the right place!

  15. Take a few photos of the engine bay from side and above and I'll take a peek around.

  17. I took a few, to hopefully enable you to trace one end of them to another...
