Starting issues...

  1. Starting issues...

    Turn key...nothing.

Turn key, slide under the back, stick a screwdriver across the terminals, get a click and spark across them but nothing else.

Battery charged, wiring connections SEEM ok.

    Diagnosis?

I'm thinking Starter Motor or Relay? Do I have a Relay? If so where is it? I'e tried chasing wires but they vanish under soundproofing and stuff.

I've changed both Ignition switch and barrel.

This has been long term, the switch was dodgy making it hard to pin point but now it's changed it helps, I used to turn the key and 75% of the time get nothing at all, now I always have power down to the Starter. Used to be that I could roll under and short the thing to start everytime but now nothing :-(

Oh and the coil gets hot if the ignitions left on for a while, normal?

    Thanks in advance!

You wont have a relay as standard.

You don't get a click when you use the ignition?

Have you actually tester the battery?

If you have actually tested the battery the I would check he feed from ignition is working using a multimeter and take it from there.

Have you tried putting it in gear and rocking and/or bump starting?

  4. Check Battery earth and the earth strap on the gearbox, make sure you have clean metal and no corrosion where they bolt on.

  6. Well, here I am again. Turning the key I am now getting a click from the back end which i'm assuming is the solenoid on my starter.

    Ignition switch is brand new.

    Starter Motor is brand new.

Battery has been fully charged. Took it to Halfords and it tested as a "good" battery. Bugger.

Rolled underneath, checked all the connections including Earth's again, refitted the battery and then hey presto...

    WTF?!

  7. Damn, from happy to downright peed off again.

Turn key, starter turns over, engine doesn't catch. This happens 4 or 5 times, I go for a cuppa, come back and she starts 2nd attempt, what is going on? Electrical issues? How can I track this down? :(

  8. Sounds similar to what mine was doing other than replacing all the old wiring with new you could try fitting a relay Which is what went with and she starts first time ( crosses fingers and touch )

  10. Checked that you are getting a spark when you take one out? It can only be something small....

  11. Is it fuel injected?
If so, check and clean up the wire from the starter to the injection unit. Although I expect you've probably done this.

  15. You've checked your main earth from battery, and gearbox to chassis, have you checked your positive at the battery paying particular attention to where the cable terminates into the terminal clamp for corrosion?

  16. I disconnected those and reconnected, but didn't clean, maybe I should try that one. What are they? lol

Put new bulbs in what i always thought were rear side indicators but nothing happens, this van is weird!
