I'm thinking about hiring a small workshop and starting to do a few jobs on the side in the evening's and weekends to get the business going some welding small restoration bit of painting ect servicing I'm fed up with my day job fancy a change and work for myself What do you lot think please tell me any suggestions
You don't need to hire a workshop Use mine just the small matter of finishing off my bus to get it out of your way with your knowledge it shouldn't take you long Seriously, you have all the skills.. Go for it and very good luck
No not really that's the bit I'm worried about its getting the jobs to do I know I can doit it's the finding the work to get going
Word of mouth is best IMHO. If you hit any problems with the job, if you've been recommended the customer seems to accept it , if not they argue the toss as think folk are out to rip them off! Good luck if you decide to do it. I'm not best at business, I do good job (I think) but poo at charging. I did quite a few loss leader type jobs initially to start building a customer base.
Just make sure you have a shorter cut off point than me! I keep having recommendations but am always worried work will dry up so undercharge. I know I'm undercharging when the customers query the price as it's too low!
