Starter battery cable size?

Discussion in 'Mech Tech' started by Robo, Jan 3, 2013.

  1. I'm contemplating moving my starter battery to the opposite side of the engine bay and fitting the leisure battery in its place due to space issues...

I will need to extend the main starter cable or replace with a single section, has anyone done this? Did you extend or replace the cable? What size cable do I need & how long?

    Thanks in advance...

  2. I wouldn't do it. You'll need a great thick cable, and the longer it is, the more voltage drop you'll get when starting.

  4. The cable is 10mm cross section (I recall) from where the battery is sitting now and that its only a short run.

It would need to be seriously thick to reach from the other side of the engine bay and it mustn't have any joins in it.

    Maybe tooo much hassle?

  5. 25mm cable is only about £7 per meter and what would you need? a little over 2m? I haven't done it and am not sure that i would but i can see the benefit!

What size leisure battery are going for?

  6. If you do go for it - I wouldn't, meself - the cable needs to be well sleeved against chafing, or great fireworks will result... :(

  7. I have two engine-starting batteries (on opposite sides of the engine bay) with no problem. I've used a very heavy duty cable ( from an old lorry jump lead) to join the positive terminals together.

The negative leads have similar but black leads going to a "boat switch" in the rear cupboard, earthing is to a new point made nearby to the bodywork. The thickness of the new cables and robust nature of the terminals is such that full power still gets to the starter motor.

    The system works fine
