Squeak/Screeching from Crankshaft

I've put the engine back in my bus, and got it running but now I've got a loud screeching/squeak coming from the end of the crankshaft just behind the pulley.

It sounds similar to when the fan belt is slipping. (which is what I thought it was at 1st.

I've also ruled out the fan rubbing against the fan housing, the pulley rubbing against the block/tinware, as now with the pulley off and turning it over the noise definately comes from the end of the crank.

Common problem? is there a bearing in there thats prone to running dry?

Will I be pulling the engine and splitting the case?

is it the fan belt end? try pulling the crank pulley off and run with no fan belt , to eliminate everything, could also be adjustment on the clutch, try the clutch pedal up and down to see if it makes any difference

Yep, fanbelt end, I ran it without the pulley to find the squeek, I'll try the clutch as the cable isnt hooked up yet.

sometimes the bottom pulley catches on the bit of tin behind it, the one you have to put on before the pulley, could be the pulleys dry of oil so popping it out oiling it and back in can help. I assume you have oil pressure ;)

I'll be trying to check it tomorrow, just have no clocks in at the moment so will be using a meter on the oil pressure switch - assuming the switch is working.

pull out the oil switch, if oil comes out you got oil pressure :) you can just wire a bulb to it, one side of the bulb to the oil switch the other to the positive of the battery, hey presto a remote oil light

    Refered noise from distributor?

  10. Back of pulley rubbing tinwear, happened to mine and destroyed my aluminium pulley!

  11. Sorry just seen you ran it without the pulley.... Hope you get it fixed

I was wondering this as its a new Accuspark distributor I've fitted, I'll fit it the original 009 to check.

    Cheers guys,

After a bit of messing about today swapping distributors, the noise has been identified.........

davidoft is the winner, its the clutch/or release bearing, hopefully it's only out of alignment (new clutch has been fitted). but I could'nt be arsed to pull the engine today, until I get a proper alignment tool, as I'd aligned it with a 1/2" extension bar with some masking tape wrapped round the end - has always worked before! :) Just pleased its not a case strip down job.

  14. One shove on the clutch pedal should align it - no need to whip the engine out ;)!

PS I'd doubt it, myself, unfortunately. They tend to screech when the clutch is depressed, not when it's up.

I was going to try that first, as today I couldnt find a/the wingnut to mount the clutch cable

Have you got the right clutch for the gearbox? I have one in pieces at the moment - early box with early release bearing but late clutch. Screeched whether foot on or off the pedal. Early clutch has 3 prongs and a "pad" but no guide for release bearing. They don't interchange. The clips for release bearing were ripped off and broken and one side of release bearing had fallen off the arm.

Cheers Zed, think you're onto something....but I'll try the cable 1st.

The release bearing is the later with clips type, bought and fitted separate, but the one supplied with the kit was the earlier style without but as the clutch plate was the same size (200mm) I went ahead and fitted it.....something to check now.

If the box has "ears" to hang the back independently to the engine, and a guide sleeve for the release bearing, it's late and you need clutch with lots of spring "teeth".
If no rear hanging and no guide sleeve, you need early release bearing and 3 prong clutch with the pad.
    Both are 200mm.

Been here, wrong clutch fitted ran with the clutch for a while(6months ish) but the clutch was minced.

A friend of mine also had late in early box and didn't even get off the drive before the release bearing fell off and the release arm forks jammed in the clutch springs...
