Spare wheel on front ... without cover?

Discussion in 'Mech Tech' started by marowak, Jul 24, 2012.

  1. Hello.

I keep thinking about putting the spare wheel on the front of Pinky - but dont really want a cover.
I'd prefer to have it with a shiny hub cap.

I've seen a few vans that do that and wanted to see if it would cause damage / deterioration to the wheel with no cover?

I will also look to get a photoshop done to see what it looks like before doing it as I do like the VW on the front and am not sure what would look best

There are two kinds of mounts. A shallow one and a deep one. To get hub-cap outside you need the deep one. I got a plain black cover for my (shallow) one. Looks ok.

  3. ah - I will as Stu as I have his old mount

  4. This is mine.

I had the shallow mount, but wanted to have the wheel facing the other way. Rather than buy a new mount I drilled and tapped some long bolts, so that they screw onto the existing studs on the shallow mount.

We used to have the wheel on the front without the cover - I think they look quite good.

We had a van with nice EMPIs and a spare on the front with a cover, only the spare had flaking and residue.

  6. i quite like the look of this one - which is Holmsens

I like the covers fitted to 4x4's with the colour coded centre piece. If you are going to fit it, I'd look at one of those. A nice shiny piece of chrome with a pink insert :)

  16. As Birdy said Chrome and colour coded (although it may make it look a bit brazilian, not a bad thing!)

You need the spare on the front- its the airbag isn't it ? :)

  19. I wouldn't do it! Had one on the front of mine when I bought but when I took it off found someone had used it as a batteri8ng ram and it had caused the front panel to severely bend!! The mounting seemed quite strong but ........ Don't do it!!
