Social distancing in a camper - did we do the right thing?

Discussion in 'General Discussion' started by paulcalf, May 28, 2020.

  1. The other day, whilst Dominic was being hotly debated, we were out having a lovely walk in the Peaks.

We ended up giving a lift to some random strangers, did we do the right thing?

We had a lovely walk, up a hill and along ladybower/derwent reservoir.
We past an elderly couple walking with sticks.
A rarely open road that runs along the reservoirs to a third reservoir was open.
After our walk we decided to drive along this beautiful road and have a brew in the camper.
We drove past the couple and remarked how far they were walking.

Later on they approached the camper and said they couldn't work out why they hadn't made it back to where they had parked, they were a bit lost.
We tried to work out what had happened and pointed them in the right direction, but it was miles back to where we thought they had parked. This was about 4pm.
We offered them a lift, they said no and they would try and walk back.
We told them we would be passing them after our brew and to flag us down if they changed their mind.
They hadn't got far when we spotted them.

We pulled up opened the door for them, they got in and sat on the bench seat which already had a blanket down, the rear sliding windows were open, we shut the door (minimising what they touched) and drove off.
As we drove them back to their car we found out they had already been walking for over 3 hours, they thought they had crossed one of the reservoirs, but in fact they hadn't, so it would have been over 3 hours walk back. They didn't have any water and it was roasty toasty!

They were very grateful and i don't believe either family was at any serious risk, but we did break the rules.

When home I washed the blanket and measured the distance from front seats to rear bench seat -just less than 2 metres!

Mrs calf has told me the couple were not elderly and were younger than us. I don't think this changes anything though.

We are happy we made the right decision, but don't think we will take any friends out for a socially distant camper trip quite yet.

Doubt this thread will attract as much debate as the Dominic Cubbings thread, but it is at least camper related!

Jesus Paul, your actions have single handedly reduced the effectiveness of lock-down. Squillions will die.
    You make me sick.

    :D

  3. Cause you did the right thing, i don't think you even needed to ask the question.

in the heat we are having anything could of happened really if they ran out of water.

You are a terrible human being. also, being younger than you doesn’t make them ‘not elderly’ ;)

  6. I know didn't need to ask really, the whole experience made me smile.

Something i wouldn't have given a second thought to before covid, but bizarrely exciting/interesting during lockdown

How will they ever learn to be responsible for themselves if people like you bale them out. Lost within a few miles with no water, no map? Idiots, I'd have left them for their own good/education, they'd have drunk from the reservoir if they had to...

In reality though I'd have given them a lift...and a bollocking while I had them trapped in the van.

  10. That`s why i always carry a map , water and a snack - so i don`t have to be rescued by anyone , if @zedders stopped to `help` i`d be gutted and rightly expect be given a lecture on how i`ve failed in life ...
    :D

    :hattip:

    PS - Top man @paulcalf , i`d have done the same ....

  11. No -

We helped a lady who’d fallen in the road on the day before the full lockdown. We managed to get her on her feet and get help for her. Good job it wasn’t 24 hours later or we would have walked past ;)

  14. You should all be tracked and traced then fed into an incinerator without hesitation, to flatten the curve and all that stuff. Cant take no chances....any body figured out the real reason old Mr Cummings went to Castle Barnard? (Clue...the UK media Circus is just a smokescreen Getting us all angry about nothing and looking the other way)

    • Castle Barnard happens to be a main research and manufacturing facility for GlaxoSmithKline.
    • GlaxoSmithKline currently has 24 vaccine products to their name, including three used against influenza

This is such utter tripe that even Labour MPs have been telling one of their own who retweeted it to take it down.
